1999 540i Sport front air dam

When I bought this car in 2001 it had a front air dam that was approx 3 to 4 inches from mounting edge to bottom edge. It mounts to the trailing edge of the front bumper cover. Unfortunately it was damaged and I had to replace it. The only air dam I can find now is only 1.5 inches deep. Does anyone have any info on that deeper air dam? I sure would like to have another one of those because it looks soooo much better than the puny one.

are you talking about pre 2001 bumper vs " post face lift"

this is my 2001 sport post face lift but it doesnt matter if its sport or not

this is m-technic or M5 style

yes - pre 2001 and hopefully you can see the dam and the wheel well front drop-downs. The depth of the wheel guards is what makes the skinny dam look out of place. The original deep dam made a better match for the wheel pieces.

Without a pic...it's not clear what you're referring to...especially without more details about this "air dam". Do you see it on other BMWs of the same vintage...or is this something that was more unique to your car?

Was it the same color as the rest of the bumper or is it just the additional black trim that all e39s have in that area? Is there any writing on the piece that indicates that it is aftermarket? If it's no longer on your car...do you have it still...and if so, did you look on the underside to see if the BMW 11 digit part nbr is embossed on it (like most original BMW pieces)?

Did you look for this piece in any of the online part databases (like www.realeom.com or www.bmwfans.info)?

If you have the regular 99 front bumper...is it #30 in the diagram below?

Or perhaps a previous owner installed the optional "aero dynamic" front bumper...is #2 in the diagram below what you're seeking?

There was also a lip spoiler available for the OEM standard bumper (the 2nd diagram in Q's post). They were available for both pre and post facelift e39s. This is one on a facelift e39. They were genuine BMW parts (not sure if they are still available), but there may be reproductions out there too.

There was also an alpina lip spoiler, which I think are pretty rare.

QSilver7 - See the 8:20 reply that has a pic attached. (I think) I see the pic on my page. It is part #30 of your diagram; black flexible rubber/plastic. I don't still have the part, therefore don't know whether it's OEM or aftermarket. I've never seen it since I started looking for it on any other car.?

Ah...yes, that would be #30 in that diagram above. Just click the link above that diagram then scroll down to #30 (in the part nbr index below the diagram) for the BMW 11 digit part number. Once you have that number...you can type "BMW xx xx x xxx xxx" into the search box and probably get multiple pages of vendors selling that part...if not...you can always go to your local or any of the BMW dealerships that advertise online/nationally and order it.

Good luck.

Q - That part that you are referencing is the skinny part that I have now. I need the old part #30 or something else.

Solo - Thanks for showing me that add-on. That's probably the best looking alternative that I've seen so far, if I can't get hooked up with the 3.5 inch dam I want. I'm amazed no BMW parts person I've talked to, is familiar with that deeper dam.

I think the pre and post facelift cars have diff part #s for item #30 perhaps one is also bigger than the other. Do you know what the part # is for the current skinny that you have not and don't like? If you can get that part number then you can figure out which one it is (pre or post facelift) and order the other one and see if that is the one you are looking for.

Just keep in mind its possible that the one that was on your car that you liked may not have been the correct item. It may be that a previous owner put a post facelift part on a pre facelift car.

The best way would be to check the old beat up part and see if you can find a part number on it. BMW stamps the part number onto a lot of their parts so maybe you will get lucky. Also if you get a chance post some pics of the old part both on an off the car. It sounds like it is part #30, but if you post a pic there is a better chance someone may recognize it.

All good ideas Solo. Every time I've asked for that part #30 they bring up the current part. Nobody ever mentioned looking back to pre-facelift to see if it was different, even though I kept asking if there was another possible part number. Now that you've been specific, I can be specific in the same way and hopefully get a yes/no answer. I think I just neeed to luck upon a parts guy that is as familiar with the nuances as you are. I'll try some of the parts places that Q mentioned. Thanks for the input, Solo!

I think it would help is you specific which part # you are giving to them for part #30 as the Pre 9/00 is part number 51118216706 while post 9/00 is 51117026383.

They are two distinctive parts that have never had the part numbers superseded and both cost about $20-$25.

Front center bumper spoiler....

Rarely seen, especially if you have scrape marks under your E39 ft. bumper....from curb or cement parking barriers. Ditto pulling off what I am replacing: the left / driver's side wheel spoiler and inner wheel cover. I hit a big rubber tire chunk at speed....PIA

Here is a recent link to the ft. center spoiler (i'd try using tiny bolts to keep it on) >> https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...er-51117026383
If BMW made this spoiler not hang down as low....it was for a good reason.
