HOW TO: replace drive side door pull

I've been noticing that the door pull on our X5 has been peeling off, but I never gave it too much attention until someone here brought it up as something cheap and simple to fix. The door pull is actually a separate piece that list for about 20 bucks.

The part number is very dependent on your car since there's several options so I can't tell you what you need. But if you want to help your part's guy, you can either look on RealOEM or on the official BMW ETK. I prefer the official BMW ETK because after you input your VIN it automatically filters out the parts that don't apply to your option list.

You can find the online version of the official BMW ETK here: http://www.bmw.com/com/en/owners/acc...catalogue.html.

To find the part follow:
"51 VEHICLE TRIM" -> "51 50 DOOR TRIM PANELS/LATERAL TRIM PANELS" -> "DOOR TRIM PANEL, FRONT" -> The part you're looking for is #16

The part looks like this. Take some time to familiarize yourself with the various clips so you know where they are as you get them undone.

Here's how mine looked like:

Using a prying tool go around the edges and lever the clips undone. Do not use a metal tool as it may ruin the leather; do not use a screw driver either as it tends to concentrate the pressure too much with the risk of damaging the door panel. if you don't have a nylon tool, you can use a credit card

Using a screw drive remove the switch cluster from the back. It takes some time and patience.

The switch to control the left/right mirror may come off, so cerefully put it back ensuring it clicks properly

Installation is revers

Enjoy!!!

Cool! And here I thought the pull and window switches were a single unit. Good to know, thanks for the write up.

Just did this and it looks much better! Very simple and inexpensive...it was a little difficult separating the switch panel from the door pull itself. Thanks for the DIY!!

Nice, is there a DIY thread for the passenger side handle pull replacement anywhere?
