Hi,
I'm new to this site and have just bought a 1998 1.9L Z3 with a blown head gasket.
I'm sure there must be a comprehensive answer as to how to remove head and replace gasket but there are so many postings on the this forum I can't find a suitable one.
Can anybody point me in the right direction?
I have replaced head gaskets on other cars but this is my first BMW and I don't have a workshop manual.

Get a Bentley manual and you'll be good to go.

I personally wouldn't touch anything under the Z3 hood without a repair manual. I bought a Haynes manual for BMW 3-Series 1992 - 1998 that includes Z3 models on an eBay store for about $15 U.S. It appears to be thorough and includes step by step procedures for cam positioning and cautions and other info like tightening sequences and torque values.

Good to see you have replaced head gaskets before. Before you replace it - take the head to a machine shop and make sure it is not warped. If it is, it'll cost you a little more to fix but at least you'll only do the job once. Good luck.
