"Recall" to update Telematics combox = BMW Assist

Just dropped my 2013 X3 off at the dealer for servicing. The service adviser told me that they have a "recall" to install an updated Telematics Control Unit, also known as "com box". Or, at my option, I could have a $250 gift card, or a $300 credit on BMW accessories in the dealership store.

I brilliantly responded... Huh? What?

After a good bit of forum searching, it turns out this is the upgraded box needed to keep your 2010 to 2013 car (and maybe earlier) compatible with the 3G to 4G cellular changeover on BMW Assist/ConnectedDrve. That program is switching to a new cell carrier on January 1st, so it will stop working on model years 2013 and older. Although it wasn't really clear to me, I gather that BMW is making this offer to at least the owners that currently have a subscription that extends past January 1. It might be available to others, I don't know.

So why the $250 gift card option? Well, many people, like myself, have no intention of ever paying the $199 a year to renew the service when it runs out at the end of the four free years. So I suspect it is much cheaper for BMW to pony up $250 to get me to forgo my rights to a (probably very expensive) replacement. Win-win.

Here's a link to the description of the telematic features for 2013 and older:

Here are some of the Assist features that stop working:

Automatic Collision Notification
Emergency Request (SOS)
Enhanced Roadside Assistance
Accident Management
MyInfo
Stolen Vehicle Recovery
Remote Door Unlock
TeleService
Customer Relations
Advanced Real-Time Traffic Information (ARTTI)
Weather Icons in Navigation Map
BMW "Remote" App.

I wonder how this will affect resale value if you do not go with the recall fix?

Good point. But also keep in mind that the annual subscription is NOT transferable to the new owner. I think you can get a refund on the unused time, but still.

Any idea whether the subscription renewal is included as part of a Maintenance Agreement extension?

Service rep at dealership confirmed the recall & said notices are being rolled out based on availability of the comm box. No clarity whether an extended maintenance agreement, or CPO extends the subscription beyond 48 months.

The brochure for "Certified Pre-Owned by BMW" and www.bmwusa.com/CPO states that BMW Roadside Assistance and BMW Assist are extended to 6 years/100,000 miles by the CPO program.

Limited upgrade

I spoke with BMW NA they stated yes a limited upgrade is available and going back to 2013 .
They used vin. To determine status and have mailed out 300k letters.
Some owners are offered change when going to dealer for service they also stated some dealers are having a hard time getting com boxes. They offer is correct as stated as in above post about gift card (strange offer) they may expand offer at a later date sure.

Does anyone know if you upgrade the combox, will it effect my navigation map version and any coding made to vehicle?

"Recall" to update Telematics combox = BMW Assist

From other threads about this on the forum, navigation is unaffected, but the car's software must be upgraded before upgrading the combox, wiping out all coding.

Yep, you'll have to get everything re-coded. Unsure about the software. But given the software in the car will be updated, I'm guessing that you'll need the latest psdzData. shawnsheridan can help you out here:

Well, I called the dealership and got an appointment for the recall (update) procedure for next Monday, so I'll let you know how did it go and if there is any noticeable change on the software after it, besides the obvious 3G/4G capability

Now to recode everything.

My BMW service advisor said my 2013 X3 isn't eligible for the upgrade and I haven't received a recall notice either. My X3 was built in October 2012. I am also interested in what models are covered and which ones aren't. Does anyone know?

Go to :

https://www.bmwassistoffer.com/sunse...mwassistoffer2

and type in the last 7 characters of your vin to see if you qualify.
I did not wait for bmw to send me a notice and just went directly via the link. You only can qualify if your bmwAssist subscription expires after Dec. 31,2016.

I don't know about the models, but in order to be eligible, you have to have an active subscription that expires AFTER 12/31/16 (mine expires 1/31/17 so I got in just for one month).

I'll tell you next week if they make me pay for another year of service right away, but as far as the upgrade, it is free.
