The BMW brand sold more than 19,000 (16 more, to be precise) vehicles in the first month of 2018. That rise marked a positive start for the year, since it was 5% more vehicles than sold in January of 2017.

Our newest products continue to be very well received by consumers, which has helped us carry the momentum that we created in 2017 into 2018 and given us a great start to the New Year, said Bernhard Kuhnt, President and CEO, BMW of North America, in a statement.

Among the strongest sellers was the 5 Series, of which nearly 2,500 were sold, bucking the industry trend away from sedans.

As for crossovers, the X3 also sold well, with nearly 3,000 moving off dealer lots in January.

The rise for the brand was echoed for the group. Sales for the BMW Group also rose last month, albeit not quite as sharply.

Despite a 5.6% drop in sales at the MINI brand, the Group still managed to outsell itself by 3.5% over January 2017.

As with MINI, though, some branches of the brand failed to grow last month. BMW Certified Pre-Owned only sold 9,100 vehicles last month, a decrease of more than 10%, as compared to 2017.

Regardless, BMW is optimistic about 2018. With new products fast approaching, and its share of the crossover pie set to grow, Kuhnt has a positive outlook for the year.

We have many new products to launch in 2018, starting with the first-ever, and much anticipated BMW X2 which will begin appearing on showroom floors later this month for its sales debut in early March, he said.
