The New Formula E Safety Car Doesn't Look Very Safe

BMW has a monopoly on the Formula E safety car game. The BMW i8 has been used to pace the earth-friendly race series since its inception and now the automaker has revealed the next i8 that will lead the electric field to green.

The new Formula E safety car is based on the BMW i8 Roadster. That means this safety car has no roof - however you may have also noticed that it's missing something else as well: its windshield. We're not sure what the purpose of removing the windshield was, BMW, but we like it.

The lack of a roof has also made the safety car seemingly less safe than the halo-shod Formula E cars - what if something were to hit the safety driver in the face? The good news is there are built-in roll hoops should said driver get a bit too excited over the kerbs, along with stronger ceramic brakes. The safety car also gets a front splitter, massive rear wing, 15 mm lower suspension and all the lights and decals necessary for safety car detail.

The BMW i8 Roadster isn't really our cup of tea, if we're honest (we prefer things with three pedals and a roof..) but if BMW were to ever sell one without a windshield, they just may have our business. There's just something undeniably cool about roofless, windshield-less performance vehicles.
