The BMW Z4 sDrive20i will be paired to a six-speed manual transmission in Europe as of July 2019. The sDrive20i will also have access to BMWs eight-speed Steptronic transmission.

Unfortunately, the impact that this will have on the American Z4 is unknown at this time. The press release that features this news comes from BMW global media site and relates to a model we may not even have access to in the US.

So far, the lowest model Z4 announced for the US is the 255 hp Z4 sDrive30i. Although it also comes with BMWs 2.0-liter inline four, it makes considerably more power than the 197 hp sDrive20i.

Fortunately, both the 20i and the 30i share the same engine despite the power gulf. In theory, then, it shouldn't be hard to fit the same six-speed transmission to the American 30i.

Whether or not expected take-rates will warrant the addition of the manual to the American car remains to be seen. But as those dedicated to the fate of the manual transmission already know, hope springs eternal.

No word yet on whether or not the six-cylinder Z4 will be offered with a manual transmission._a2_
