BMW Lights Up Grilles With New X6

BMW has just revealed a new X6 crossover coupe. It'll come with available V8 power, rear-wheel drive, and, because this is a crossover coupe, a grille that lights up in the dark.

It's a sharper-looking, more bulbous X6, with plenty of BMW's new angry headlights and giant grilles. And a slightly odd line where the door trim just doesn't quite meet that hood crease in the right spot. It's an inch longer, 1.6-inches more in wheelbase, and 0.6-inches wider. It's also shorter in height, which BMW says improves aero.

That big kidney grille gets active air slate, but it also premieres a new illuminated grille option. It's part of the DRL system and stays on when the X6 is moving. It's also incredibly gaudy, but Merc is already doing sort of the same thing, and crossover coupes are already all about excess, so it probably will find plenty of eager buyers.

The 2020 X6 will come with a trio of driveline options. The first use BMW's 3.0L TwinPower turbo inline six. 335 hp and 330 lb-ft. That's up 33 hp and 35 lb-ft over last year. The 40i can be had in sDrive and xDrive variants. The former is BMW for rear-wheel drive, the latter for all-wheel drive. Both get an eight-speed auto. Then there's the V8 option. A 4.4L twinpower model that bumps up the old model 78 hp and 74 torques to 523 hp and 553 lb-ft. That one's AWD only.

BMW will fit the X6 with optional handling packs that add active roll stabilization and rear-wheel steering. Plus an optional air ride with automatic self-levelling. The xDrive40i can be had with an off-road pack that adds an electronic M Sport rear diff, the air suspension, and four off-road drive modes.

Back-up assistant has been added, allowing the X6 to reverse semi-autonomously up to 50 yards. Top and panorama camera views are available, and a full suite of active safety features are on the options list.

The Spartanburg, SC, built X6 will start from $64,300 for the six and hit $85,650 for an M50i._a2_
