Upcoming 2 Series GC Might Not be FWD After All

Worried about the upcoming BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe turning front-drive? Well, maybe you don't need to be. That's per a new report from Auto Express.

We had heard that at least one variant of the next 2, set for sometime next year, would be based on BMW's front-drive platform. The one shared with the 1er hatch and the latest Mini. But now an interview with the company's chief engineer says that maybe we had heard wrong.

Talking about the upcoming i4, Klaus Frhlich told AE that "this is our Cluster Architecture. This is in our rear-wheel drive cars; from the 2 successor [and] up to the X7."

The CLAR platform takes a single bulkhead and can move everything else to meet different track width, wheelbases, lengths, and even batteries.

BMW has been Gran Coupe-ing just about everything of late, including the 8 Series. So it makes sense that the 2 will get one. And maybe even the 1 if they can make the roofline work. That last one isn't based on any actual rumors, though, just a what-if. The 1 Series hatch is the more practical way to make a small car, so think of the 2GC as sitting more alongside it than on top of it.

Auto Express says that the 2 Series Gran Coupe could come with a wide range of engines from the rest of BMW's lineup, but it'll get a six-speed stick or eight-speed auto. And, of course, expect some xDrive all-wheel drive scattered in there too.
