Australian Cops Get M5 Competition

Looks like the death of Holden and Ford of Australia didn't mean the end of the V8 Interceptor after all. Here's Australia's new Mad Max. It's the BMW M5 Competition, and it's going to be chasing baddies down under.

The M5 Competition will run you $229,900 dollarydoos, but before local taxpayers get upset, they should know that BMW is supplying this one gratis for a year.

Of course, it's not completely from left field. The department has recently started using much more sedate BMW 530d cars for police service. We dare say those ones offer up a bit better fuel economy compared with the M5 Competition.

But they can't offer the M5's twin-turbo V8. That's 4.4L, 617 hp, and 553 lb-ft. More than Max's supercharged engine could hope to produce. Of course, the 3.3-seconds to 60 mph M5 is also kitted up with lights and sirens as well as a pretty sweet-looking police livery.

“Our 530ds have impressed the force with their combination of performance, comfort, dynamics and efficiency," said BMW Australia CEO Vikram Pawah. "With our Condition-Based Servicing model, these vehicles offer strong lifecycle value for Victoria Police. Now with the incredible BMW M5 Competition entering Victoria Police service, the performance level has jumped up the scale. When combined with the safety of the xDrive four-wheel drive system, the M5’s all-round ability aspects makes it a natural fit for dynamic police duties."

We already know you can't outrun the radio, but if you see this in your mirror, you're not even going to want to try._a2_
