Alpina Reveals B3 Sedan

Alpina has just launched its latest BMW-based offering. The B3 sedan follows the matching Touring wagon which was introduced last month in Frankfurt.

Alpina sort of fills in the gap between the top regular BMW offering and the M offering. Or, in a few cases, offering something above the top model that BMW offers internally.

In this case, the B3 uses the same 3.0L twin-turbo straight-six as the M3 will get, which is already in the X3 and X4 Ms (and in the BMW X40is, with less power). Alpina tunes the engine for 462 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, which is a bit less than the 473 hp of the Ms, but is far more torque than the 443 that BMW offers. Which is sort of Alpina's thing, a more relaxed, torquey performance instead of the visceral M car.

It will sit on Alpina's signature multispoke wheels and get fully adaptive dampers with Eibach springs and larger anti-roll bars than the non-M cars. Larger brakes than a standard 3er will make sure it can stop with the extra power. Alpina has also tweaked the eight-speed gearbox to handle the power and get quicker shift times.

The result is a touring sedan that can hit 62 mph in 3.8 seconds and do 188 mph flat-out, with styling that's uniquely Alpina. More authoritative than a regular 3, but more restrained than an M. Except for that Alpina script on the nose.

The B3 is open for orders early next year, but not for you, North America._a2_
