BMW Teases New M4 GT3 Racer

Remember the giant M8 that tore up the endurance racing world a couple of years back? Here's the sequel, the M4 GT3, ready to top the BMW M Motorsports line and take over the M6 GT3's spot in racing series around the world.

The new racer will head to the test track early next year, getting ready for the various racing series where the customer racecar will do battle, though BMW said it probably won't see race use until 2021. It's based on the production M4, powered by a twin-turbo inline-six that will make more than 500 hp depending on the series. BMW M says the S58 from the road car, along with that chassis, "are the perfect basis for the development of the GT3 racing version," so it uses a version of that same engine.

"With our new GT3 project, we are emphasising the significance of BMW M Customer Racing. It is a central pillar of our motorsport programme, said BMW Group Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. With the introduction of the new GT3 regulations for 2022, the BMW M4 is the perfect base. The core product from our colleagues at BMW M is yet again just great. Without wanting to give too much away, the BMW M4 GT3 will be a real highlight in terms of optics and technology."

Expect the M4 GT3 racer to end up in series like the FIA GT World Cup, and races like the 24 Hours of Spa. This is just a teaser, so we're hoping to see the whole thing sometime later this year, perhaps at the Frankfurt auto show._a2_
