BMW's electrification plans are just getting charged up, with a slate of vehicles set to arrive to sell alongside and replace the long-lived i3. The company is expected to launch 13 new EVs in just three years. IT looks like two of those will be electric versions of the company's 5 and 7 Series luxury sedans, set to arrive for 2022.

German publication Handelsblatt brings us the new information, citing BMW and industry insiders, saying that BMW understands the need to overtake Mercedes-Benz and keep Tesla in the rear-view mirror.

It's part of new CEO Oliver Zipse's plan to keep the company moving forward. The new exec, despite being in charge at BMW for less than a year, has now said that the automaker will have a third of its sales be electrified by 2025.

So when can we expect an electric 7er? 2022, Handelsblatt says, with the 5 arriving soon after. Of course, they won't be exclusively electric, and the report says that diesel, gas, and hybrid options will remain.

As with every automaker, electrification comes at the expense of profits, at least in this early stage, but Handelsblatt says that the company's majority shareholders, Susanne Klatten and Stefan Quandt, help offer long-term stability and the ability to see these expensive decisions through.

The report brings to light the differences in strategy between BMW and competitors like the VW Group and Tesla when it comes to electrification. BMW isn't planning to build electric-only factories, making only EV-only platforms. Instead, the plan is for the EVs to share components with conventional cars, and to be built alongside combustion-powered versions on the same line. At least during this period of transition. BMW also hasn't announced the massive EV-related layoffs that other automakers have already started. Instead, BMW is planning to reduce costs by 12 billion euros by 2022 without job cuts, while increasing sales._a__a2_
