BMW Previews Electric Gran Coupe with Concept i4

The Concept i4 is our first look at the production electric Gran Coupe that is expected to arrive sometime next year, much like the Concept 4 that showed us the new 4 Series last year. Yes, it's electric, and yes, it'll still have a rather large set of kidney grilles.

Because it's not really a grille, though, BMW is going to use it for some new functions. BMW now calls it an "intelligence panel" with sensors packed inside and a blue accent that's the signature of BMW i. Like the rest of BMW's latest, the not-a-grille is large, but that's the company's current styling trend, so don't expect it to change for at least a generation or two.

The sleek styling looks just about production-ready, so we'd expect the real i4 to look much like this. Maybe some larger headlights or mirrors, but we predict that what you see here is largely what you'll get. And we're ok with that because this is a good looking four-door.

BMW says that despite the sleek roof, this is spacious inside for rear passengers, and it comes with integral headrests with cutouts for "sporting feel." The cabin is still focused at the driver, including what the automaker calls "a look ahead" to the next-generation of displays for the iNext and i4 production models. Non-reflective glass lets BMW remove the usual cluster brow for a more uncluttered look, enhanced by the large curved display.

On that screen are three new display modes the company calls Experience Modes. It previews the next-gen BMW OS and uses Core, Sport, and Efficient modes, where uses can swipe through and rearrange widgets as needed. Sport brings them closer together and adds performance displays, and Efficient tells you how to save your electrons.

The Concept i4 uses a single electric motor and 80 kWh battery, giving 530 hp and an EPA-estimated 270-mile range. It's the fifth-generation of BMW's eDrive technology. The production car will start rolling off the line in 2021 at BMW's main plant in Munich._a2_
