There's a new BMW M2 coming, and while that's probably not a surprise to anyone, what's coming with it might be. That's because the report from Autocar that confirms the new model also says that it will bring an M2 Gran Coupe and a real M 1 Series along with it.

The report says that the G87 M2 is set to go on sale, in the UK, at least, starting in 2022, using a detuned version of the upcoming M3 and M4's motor. That twin-turbo 3.0L could offer 420 hp in M2 form, 16 hp more than the current M2 Competition, though the report says that figure isn't official. It would just barely put it over the 416 hp Mercedes-AMG A45 S, so there's definitely something to that figure.

That should make it quicker than the current M2, but the use of the Cluster Architecture Platform is the interesting bit. CLAR is what underpins the new Z4, not the 2 Series Gran Coupe, so the M2 should keep its engine mounted north-south and not sideways like the new car. It also allows for a 48V architecture should BMW decide to add that to the car, which will also get styling more like the 2 Series Gran Coupe than the current 2 Series coupe.

So what about the previously denied 2GC? The hot Merc A45 and Audi RS3 mean that BMW decided to strike back. Autocar says it understands that a 400 hp version of the M235i GC's four-cylinder could end up in that car. And it could then turn the 1 Series into a real M car, though one that's front-drive biased rather than a traditional longitudianl arrangement._a__a2_
