Alpina D3 S Hits 60 in Four Seconds, Gets 45 mpg

Just in case you'd forgotten about them with everything that's going on right now, Alpina has just revealed it's latest model. A diesel-powered D3 S that gives the compact sports sedan (and wagon!) astonishing levels of torque with equally absurd mpg.

It's also the first Alpina mild hybrid, thanks to the 48V starter-generator that BMW has added to the latest B57 3.0L straight-six, giving it better stop-start as well as a bit of extra torque to improve throttle response.

The standard engine makes 335 hp and 516 lb-ft in the M340d, but with Alpina adding a larger intercooler and other improved cooling bits (and a retune of the engine management) the D3 S makes 350 hp and 538 lb-ft of torque. Even better, though, especially if you're planning to run it to the 170 mph top speed for long (168 for the wagon) is that the D3 S is rated for 37 mpg combined or an even more amazing 45 highway.

The eight-speed auto has some software tweaks to help it handle sustained high loads, and the car is able to hit 62 mph in 4.6 from a stop thanks to the xDrive all-wheel drive system and a limited-slip diff in the rear. There's also an Alpina adaptive sport suspension fitted, the same one as is on the gas B3. Alpina's signature 20-spoke wheels shed around 30 pounds of weight in addition to giving it the brand's look. Larger brakes come from the 5er-based B5 Biturbo and composite discs are on offer.

It'll be on sale soon, with deliveries starting in November. In Europe, of course, where diesel is only slightly a bad word, starting from Ä70,500._a2_
