New BMW Ad Shows Off Armored X5

It starts much like any other performance SUV ad, telling you that you have the power, precision, and razor-sharp reflexes to outrun a speeding bullet in your four-ton monster. But then things go a little bit sideways because this isn't just any BMW X5.

It's the X5 Protection VR6 that gives no apologies to VW for stealing the name of that company's narrow-angle engine. Then again, it doesn't have to. If VW has beef with BMW over it, they're going to need some serious hardware to give them what for.

The BMW Protection VR6 is the German sports car maker's armored version of the standard X5. That means 33 mm of laminated safety glass that is able to stop a bullet from entering the cabin.

You won't see signs of it from outside, but this BMW has overlapping door jams and ballistic steel protecting the passengers. It can provide protection from up to "7.62 ◊ 39 FeC or 7.62 ◊ 39 SC respectively, as used in weapons of the type AK-47" BMW says. The floor can protect against hand grenades and a stronger, more armored roof is available. That protects against up to 200 grams of C4 in a drone attack.

That's not all, of course, you also get a self-sealing fuel tank and runflat tires as well as post-crash features that remove some of the BMW's existing after-crash functions, like shutting off the engine, to make sure you're still mobile after an attack.

Moving the heavy X5 around is a 530 hp, 4.4L V8 to get you out of the situation in a hurry.

Does BMW show the bullet hitting the x5? Of course not. But it still a cool ad for a crossover you'll probably hope never to need.
