Alpina's XB7 is the X7 With the Beef to Balance the Grille

BMW might not be planning a full M version of the X7 full-size crossover, but there's good news because the bicycle-spoke BMW boosters at Alpina are picking up the slack with a version of the X7 all their own making more than 600 hp and hitting 180 mph flat out.

Alpina calls the XB7 its first SUV for the US (well, they call it an SAV because it's BMW), and it will join the B7 sedan in the automaker's lineup starting this fall.

The most important bit here is the 4.4L twin-turbo V8 that's been boosted from 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque in the X7 M50i to a much more respectable 612 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque from 2,000 rpm all the way to 5,000. That's just 5 hp short of the M8 Competition and 43 more torques and makes it one of the most powerful BMWs you can buy. It'll hit 60 in just four seconds flat, and run to 180 mph all-out. That's a limited speed, too, only allowed with the 21-inch performance tire option.

Putting that power to the four wheels is a ZF eight-speed Alpina says has been modified to handle the torque of this V8. At the back is an electronically controlled active limited-slip diff to send power to the tire with grip.

Underneath is a two-axle air suspension with Alpina-spec dampers that can change the ride height 3.2 inches for cornering, aero, and speed-bump clearance. Alpina reinforces the structure with extra struts and the Xb7 adds stiffer rear axle bushings.

Of course it has Alpina's signature looks with a new large-intake front bumper and Alpina script as well as a rear diffuser along with the company's signature intricate very-multi-spoke wheels.

Inside are fancier leather seats, soft-close doors, and a leather instrument panel. Plus an LED roof that illuminates the glass with a starlit sky.

Order books for the Alpina XB7 open this month and deliveries are set for September. Bring at least $142,295._a2_
