New Report Says M2 Production Ending This Fall

The M2 is dead this fall, says a new report.

Don't fear, though, the news from bimmertoday says that it's only the M2 and M2 Competition models destined for sale in Europe that will be getting the axe. For now, at least.

The blame falls on ever-increasing emissions standards and reduced CO2 fleet requirements. The M2 and M2 Competition are the last cars to use the S55 3.0L twin-turbo engine, after the M4 was recently discontinued while we wait for the latest 4 Series generation to arrive.

With just one model using the engines, and an all-new version of the underlying car expected to arrive next year, it didn't make sense to update the just-right-sized M2's 410 hp six to meet stricter standards for just a few months. Especially when some of those months will likely be like the ones we're seeing now where new car sales have cratered.

BMW's main market for the M2 is the US, and since emissions standards in the states aren't likely to get more stringent anytime soon, the M2 will continue to be sold here, as well as other non-Euro markets. At least for a while, because with the G42 2er coupe expected in 2021, all current 2 Series variants are likely to end production then, and we'll wait once again for the latest M2. Hopefully sporting the S58, the latest engine from M that puts 503 hp in the Competition versions of the X3 and X4 M models._a__a2_
