Do You Always Request A Loaner?

My oil change is approaching and would like to request one because I don't know how long that change could take, but, being the considerate person I am, would like to leave them for those who really need them. Bottom line, do you always request a loaner whenever making an appointment for BMW service?

I do because an appointment means nothing. From my experience, an appointment means they will take your car in for service on a given day. Even if it is something as simple as an oil change, they won't get to it for hours.

The service bays tend to work on cars first come first served for the day even with an appointment.

I wish I could drive by, wait and hour for an oil change and go. But that has never been the case. The one time I waited for an oil change, it took over 3 hours.

You could ask, but they will probably not give you one for just an oil change. If you have an appointment, it's a couple hours or less (at least that's what they will tell you). Look up the numerous threads on "loaner cars" and see how difficult it is for some customers to get them at all. It all depends on the dealer, their "loaner" policy, and whatever realtionship you already have with them. The policy varies greatly from dealer to dealer, as it's completley up to each to do whatever they want. What dealer do you go to?

I ask for one when I need it.

An oil change takes less than 45 minutes. I always ask for the first or second appointment of the morning so I'm in and out in less than an hour. Free coffee, donuts and a good TV in the lounge, so it's no trouble to wait.

If it's going to be more than an hour, my time is money - I need to be at work. And it seems to be a good trade off for the service department - if they give me the loaner, I don't care if they do the work in 15 minutes or 7 1/2 hours, just as long as it's ready when promised.

Yes we always ask for one and they always give us one, plus they come pick up the car from our house, so it's all good.
Yes, and we get the same treatment out here in N. CA. We are very busy people and the high quality of service from Prestige Imports in Santa Rosa has meant a great deal to us. :)

Yes, because even if an oil service only really takes an hour tops, VOB service is jam-packed so they dont get to it for hours. So far, its always been a loaner from Enterprise, but I talked to my sales rep about it and she said next time we bring it in and let her know ahead of time, she'll make sure we get a BMW loaner

Chuck is right on target compared to my experiences. For this reason, yes, I always ask for and get a loaner.

I wish I could get that treatment. I always ask and I they have given me one twice. I have taken my car to Cunningham BMW on several occasions and they are quick to send you across the street to Hertz car rental for a fine Kia or Hyundai in which the dealer will only pay for the 1st day, even if they keep your car for 3-4 days like they do the 745/750/760. I am starting to get fed up with these guys. I used to have a Lexus and I never left the dealership without a loaner, EVER!!!!! They would even allow me to have a loaner if I was going to drive to Vegas or Phoenix for the weekend to spare the wear-and-tear on my car. I'm starting to miss Lexus. LOL

To get a BMW loaner, you have to get it serviced at the dealer you bought the BMW from. The dealers, if they have any, dont have many BMW loaners and if you dont request and/or have connections, they'll just point you to the rental car company. At least thats the way it is with my dealership.........

As long as I call ahead and schedule it they always provide a loaner. You have to be 21 or older to drive the loaners. They do use a company but they own the company.

I am always offered a loaner, although it is through Enterprise. When I had my recent stretch of head light issues. light not lice :bigpimp: They put me in a caravan, Armada and finally a e90 325. I'd rather not wait for the service since the dealership is the other direction from my office. As long as they have my car I want a loaner.

I never heard of this from any car dealer, except from my BMW dealer. They call it "gas surcharge" - is this consider normal or even ethical?
Maybe it's a way to deter people from requesting loners? But, still, I do not feel that it is proper to name it a "gas surchrage" as the customer is 100% financially responsible for the gas.

Over all, interesting responses here. My car came from Irvine BMW, but I go to the Desert BMW of Henderson for service now and they have allowed me to use their loaners, although they were a little reluctant... "Ohh, I requested a loaner three weeks ago..." "so, you still want the loaner... okay." But, they are happy when you say, "I have a reservation at Hertz, can I..." "...get a ride? Sure, I'll page the shuttle for you."

No Free Loaner in Ohio according to Kelly BMW

Here's the info directly from Kelly BMW's site.
"Loaner Policy: Provided to owners who PURCHASED/LEASED vehicle from KELLY BMW. Model availability may be limited. Must be 21 years old additional rules apply. Due to insurance coverage issues KELLY BMW is required to charge $5.00 per day for rental of service loaner vehicles. This is a requirement of BMW for all BMW dealerships in the state of Ohio. Refueling of loaners remains the responsibility of the customer. Owners of vehicles not purchased from Kelly BMW may request daily rental vehicle from Enterprise Rent a Car (614)476-1111 at the vehicle owners expense"

I thought they were just trying to recoup some expenses for maintaining a loaner. $5 is fair enough. But what turned me off was that if you didn't buy from them, you don't get a "free" loaner.

I live in Reynoldsburg but drive to Dublin (Midwestern BMW) for service. Last time I was there, I got a 2005 530i as my loaner - NO CHARGE. They hadn't had time to refuel it when I dropped mine off so they told me I didn't even need to replace the gas I used.

It depends... my BMW dealer has an Enterprise Rental counter right in the showroom. Even if it's not obvious, many dealers have their loaner fleet set up like "rentals" with a contract that you must sign. Then they just take care of the rental charge internally. Most rental companies will not rent to drivers under 21.

As an aside, I stopped by Glendale Lexus on Thursday because the air conditioning in our RX400h wasn't blowing cold. It was about 2:40pm and I was on my way to pick up the nephew at school at 3:15pm. I was just passing by, but wondering if it was a warranty issue, and if I could make an appointment...

Well, the SA took one look and said "this isn't right at all... can we keep the car and take a look?" I had a loaner (RX350) and was out the door in 15 minutes. He called me later and apologized because the part they needed to replace, under full warranty, had to be ordered and couldn't be delivered until Monday. Because the weather turned so warm, he said to keep the loaner for the weekend.

Oh, and we bought the car at Longo.

If only I could get this kind of service from my BMW dealer... :(

I knew about the over 21 rule, but I didnt think that BMW used Enterprise. I thought they had their own bmw rental service. Thats where i was confused.

BMW of Austin has BMW loaners if you bought the car there (I did). Otherwise, Enterprise is on site.

I have only had trouble once getting a loaner and that was because my normal SA was in the hospital and the guy I had to work with (John Myrtle) gave me the royal runaround: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1473004&postcount=69

Oh yeah, one more thing.... I used half the tank on the loaner from Glendale Lexus and didn't refuel. No charge. :)
