Hi fellow bimmerfest members, need some quick advice on my upcoming modification to my 540it touring. I'm suppose to be picking up a pair of 19in style 95s 7 series wheels and it has a pair of 275/45 r19s on the rear. After reading all post on this mod I've seen that everyone seems to lower the tire profile to 265 or so and use adapters. I on the other hand am looking to have the rims bore to 74.1 I believe it is for the e39 hub. By doing so I want to eliminate the use of adapters and spacers. Also I'm really looking forward to keeping the 275/45r19 tires because they are brand new and come with the rims. That being said I would like to know if anyone has done this mood and has not had to use spacers, roll finders, or had serious issues. My touring is at stock ride height and has no adjustments to the suspension. Also it is equipped with the self leveling air suspension in the rear. Please guys I will really appreciate the help and fast response as I hope to get the wheels before someone snatches them from me. Thank you

Have you used a simple tire size calculator to check the difference in rolling diameter/circumference of a 19" tire with an aspect ratio of 45? (just google tire size calculator, then compare the recommended 5 series tires listed on your door jamb & compare that to the tires on the 7 series wheels you're looking to buy)

The 7 series are much heavier cars and uses a larger rolling diameter/circumference versus the 5 series. Even though you may be able to run their wheels...the tires must be changed.

Then you add in that the e39 Touring NEVER came with staggered tires from BMW (due to the rear SLS)...to run a tire that wide and tall will probably have issues with rubbing. If you don't, report back...and you'll probably make a lot of future e39 Touring owners happy when they run across your thread. :)

I haven't looked up any tire specs...but my guess is...you'll probably need a 40/35 (front/rear) aspect ratio 19" tire (if staggered)...and you should be able to use either ratio if all the tires/wheels are the same size.

Again, a simple google search for a tire size calculator will answer this question for you ...and just guessing...you'll probably be looking at 265/35/19 or 275/35/19 or possibly even 285/35/19 tires for the rear (again if staggered)

Thanks for the reply. I'm going to look into the tire calculator. Plus after reading numerous threads and post I found someone who has 275/45r19s on there 540i sedan. So I'm hoping to get lucky. Will post picks if everything works out.

Finally mounted my style 95s and I'm happy to say it worked like a glove.. My touring still needs some tlc but it's looking way better. Just need to repaint the rims back to polished aluminum, the person I had bought the wheels from had painted them black. Will post pics, was getting dark and couldn't get any at the moment.

Hi,

The 275/45/19 tyres are 3 profiles too tall for the recommended rolling radius for the E39. The correct size to maintain as close to original tyre sizing RR is 275/30/19. You can get away with using 265/30/19 as well. Running the wrong profile tyres can cause the car's computer to get confused and I think one of the issue with that is the gearbox can go into limp mode as it'll be receiving the wrong data. The front tyres should be 245/35/19 although you can get away with 235/35/19.

You do need the car lowering for sure ! it just doesn't look 'right' currently !

Here's mine

275/30/19 rear
245/45/19 front.

Cheers, Dennis!

Lowering it is the next step, it still needs a lot more tlc. But it being a project car I've been putting it off for to long. I'll get it done. As for the tire profile thank god I haven't had any issues but will soon see. Haven't been driving it much.

I vaguely recall that the speedometer of the car picks up the reading from one rear wheel and one front wheel. On your car, the speedo reading will be grossly incorrect - you will be travelling significantly faster than your speedo will be showing (i think thats the right way around! if the tyres have a much larger rolling radius, then the speedo shows a lower rate of speed compared to actual and if the rolling radius is much smaller, you'll be going quite a bit slower than is shown on the speedo)

So, you do have issues with running these incorrect sized tyres. Perhaps get a known good working GPS unit and do a comparison - I think the faster you go, the higher the percentage difference as well. At an indicated 65 on your speedo, you'll likely be doing 74+ mph in reality at which point you run some serious risks of the cops latching onto you!

Selfmade5280 - as from this thread and many other's over the years, these wheels can be made to fit an E39 easily. You can either bore the centres or use those adaptor spacers which allow you to run a 72.56mm CB wheel on the E39. I highly suggest you run the correct sized tyres for the E39's recommended rolling radius requirement :)

Cheers, Dennis!

Hello. The wagon looks good with those wheels.. I also am buying a set of chrome staggered wheels same style.. My car is the 540i m sport.. How much did the boring cost ya?? Thanks!
Sorry for such a late response, but I recommend going for the ecs tuning hub converters that change the hub to a 72.1 I believe it is. It's more practical and you get to change the wheel bearings in the process sense your changing the hub and it comes included. I made the mistake of paying 200bucks for the bor and mounting of the tire/balancing. Should have went with the converters

Updates of the shagwagion status

Well just installed my bilstein coil overs and new front suspension yesterday and i have to say the car is looking amazing. Only issue is that my front style 95s are rubbing the coil overs and i can't drive it on those tires yet. Looking into spacers and I've read a few forms regarding spacers, anyone have any ideas for what possible size I should go for. My description is quit vague, I'm not at home right now and I don't remember what tire profile have set on the front Ill update when i get home. Its to be expected that i may have to role the front fenders but lets see. I installed the old 20 in wheels that where on the car when i purchased it so that I can test out the new set up. And it cleared and the car is riding better then ever. It still needs some tweaks but I'm happy. I will be even happier when i get my style 95s on and my new m5 front end ill be even happier

Did some more work on the touring today, swapping out a damaged fender. Remembered that I had to post up my front tire profile and it's 245/40 r19 on the 95s. Trying to figure out what can I go to fit them back on without rubbing the coilover. Tried out a spacer and was blocked at the fact that my lug nuts weren't long enough for the added spacer. Even with the spacer in place I am skeptical about having a spacer set up. If I do go along with it all the weight is going to be on the lug nuts since the rim isn't even touching the hub. Wouldn't feel so safe..That being said I would really appreciate any advice while I still search other forums.
