I have a 2003 E46 4D with Xeon headlights. Unfortunately the lights have developed the dimming because of degradation of the reflector. I have been reading the various postings on possible repairs and modifications to get around the absurd price for new headlight assemblies. It appears the most logical choice is to convert to conventional halogen assemblies, but that is still a bit of a steep price for a car of its age. Has anyone purchased some of the aftermarket units that I have seen on eBay, and what has been your experience? Or is there a sensible process I should follow… other than sell the car.

No, don't switch to halogens or your other choices. Search for a ZKW burnt bowl thread, I'm guessing that's your issue. You just need to replace the burnt piece
