No I didn't. Could I just take it to Autozone for that? The battery is brand new (July). This is only my 2nd car (Chrysler 300 being the first) so maintenance is not yet my forte lol. I'm thinking with this car, it will soon become it though :tsk:

 

The battery needs to be registered to the car, even if its new. if it wasnt it could be the source of your problems. you need to bring the car to the dealer or have a mech with the proper tools register the battery.

 

Ok thanks. I just took it to Autozone and they said the battery needs to be charged. I got the battery through my local BMW dealership, you would think they would register it on the spot since I paid about $450 for it

 

Mine did the same thing. They replaced the alternator. When it starts to sieze up it creates an over voltage situation that throws the car into chaos.

They also replaced the Alternator bracket at the same time as it was leaking. The total was about $1400 or so I think, which was with the 15% discount you get with the BMW Service Card.

 

Ok thanks. I'm going to try and charge my battery overnight and see how it is in the morning and if no change, I'll look into the alternator issue.

 

Major Errors

Based on reading the transmission fault thread here, I went to BMW and spent $125 on a new Integrated Supply Module. Still nothing. My battery appears to be ok and I guess I am going to break down and take it to BMW.

Any Suggestions?

Ask the dealer to re-register the batt, it takes less than 5 min to do.

I am taking it to a BMW Shop that is not a dealer. I will ask them if they can do that first before going through all the tests. What do you think about the Alternator issue???

The battery is not new. It came with the car and is original but I am not getting any other indication that the battery is the issue. I have bright lights, the car starts on the first try, etc. Just all the warnings on the dash and stuck in 3rd gear. The odometer doesnt register.

 

Alternator +1

When the regulator goes bad in the alternator the voltage goes way up and alot of the modules shut down. This explains why your instrument cluster is not working. The car will stay running and the trans will go into failsafe, but most un-necessary functions will shut down.

You really should get the car to someone who can read the error codes. The codes will tell you for sure if the alernator is the problem.

Autozone has the alternator for ~$299 with lifetime warranty.

Do you think that I should put my old integrated supply module back in and take the new one I installed back to BMW? I think so but I am worried that I will have to reset the on-board computer after getting it back from the dealer. If I do need one, I found one online for $40 but not fast shipping when I thought I was in a have to.

Actually, I just checked and it's only $249! Thats a great price!

 

I just got a call from the Service Department. They tell me I have to replace the transmission pan because its leaking, the Alternator Bracket is leaking and the Rear Breaks need changed....about $1900 in repairs and still no idea why the massive errors are occuring. They said it sounds like a short in one of the modules.

What do you guys think? How hard is it to do the transmission pan myself??? is it worth it?

 

UPDATE:

After two days in the shop, BMW replaced the wire going from the front control box to the rear control box. The wire was damaged by the transmission fluid eating into the line. I had a leak. The cost was $500 for the repairs.

 

Well, I put a slow charge on the battery and that seemed to work. I just replaced the micro filter and oil since it was due for a service but I'm sure neither of those were the cause of THOSE errors.

I was told by Keif and a BMW Tech the battery could have low or too much voltage at the beginning of winter and that could cause the erroneous and erratic codes.

So I left a slow (2A) charge on the battery for a day and a half and have been error free for a week now ::crosses fingers::

same thing happend to me and i got lucky... everything went away after about 2 days. thank god and knock on wood.

 

Check you ZGM....the gateway module....everything goes through it

im having these same warnings here,plus ive found water on my pass foot well,front and rear too fig because i park at an incline so water accum at rear pass foot well also..i wonder if it is the ZGM since ive tracked water coming down from under pass side dash/glove box

the RPM's don't move and I'm getting a ton of errors pop up such as:
Dynamic Drive inactive
Brake/Drive fault drive moderately
Parking brake malfunction
Transmission fault, Drive moderately
Servotronic malfunction - increase steering effort.
The gear display (R, N, D, P) is not even showing up. That spot is blank on the display.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Start with your battery, if it's weak all sorts of errors will pop up. Check the manufacture date on it and go from there. These cars do crazy things when the battery is low.

Battery/Alternator

Had the same issue less than a month ago and it was the battery and alternator that went out at the same time. After replacing both, car seems ok.
