I don't know about all M42s, but my 95 YM (build date 12/94) 318is has two of them on the same harness plug.

I’ve engaged into full battle now, new knock sensors, crank sensor, (both dilapidated and cracked) timing chain cover gasket low and hi, (source of leak) new crank seal ( old one not leaking too bad I think) ac compressor was covered in oil along with original cracked wire crank sensor, what a pita the ac bracket is, new heater hoses (bigger ones) that are buried. The puzzle of wires and hoses and manifolds and fuel system is a test of patience and can be relaxing or frustrating at the same time. Runs great for now, have now started the famous heater core surgery to mend the smelly antifreeze smell in cab, will also tackle removing cheaply glued headliner and try my hand at interior work. Lastly as it was running the accelerator grommet had disintegrated and the cable fell out of the pedal. Made my own Mcgyver contraption and it’s back in business. Good highway cruiser at 70-80, pretty slow off the line. My old 2.5 97 legacy wagon with auto tranny was much quicker from the stop.

Heater coil is removed, oem real parts is missing one set of o rings in their pic, there are 3 locations / connections where o rings are needed, they don’t show them between the triple hose connection and the plastic block in the firewall. Didn’t see any obvious signs of leaking at the coil, which was a bit disappointing, some of the old o rings do seem to squished down considerably, what’s weird is most of them look square cut, like a garden hose washer, yet the new ones are round, maybe they form into square after many years. all’s I got to say is this better make the odor go away. Installation commencing soon.

Notice the cavitation erosion on the radiator hose double fitting. The tiny crossover passage was filled with gasket sealer when I removed it. Thanks hack mechanics, this creates a huge swirling dam of coolant right at the tstat as the engines waits to warm up, wearing away the aluminum.

Notice the notched plastic door by pipe connecting into coil, also had to delete a plastic armature on driver side which held up some electrical device by way of push pin in order to install pipes as a complete unit. Absolutely no forethought on BMW’s engineering concerning coil replacement as well as Evap coil. It’s redickalous. No wonder service is outrageously $$$$.

Latest update: after tearing apart the upper and lower manifold , timing chain cover. 2 new knock sensors, one crankshaft position sensor, bought a new cam sensor but the connector was backwards, used old, 4 new coils, valve cover , front crank seal, new heater coil, new wires, new fuel filter , new catalytic converter, various new heater hoses and vacuum hoses, I still was able to replicate the hesitation on the freeway, and intermittent abs light. Today installed one new right front and rear left sensor, cleaned up 4 speed rings, and installed a brand new…wait for it…..Hella fuel pump. Test drive was so great, no hesitation, plenty of power 70-90 mph, no hesitation, no abs light in a 29 mile test drive. It’s running real good (knock on wood) the original fuel pump looked fine except the strainer was petrified and was totally black. Not sure if black was the color new , but the new one is white with a plastic rib cage to keep a blimp type shape . The old strainer was fairly flat. Oh my, please let this be the fix!! Will post pic of black strainer later. This car is a little highway rocket hope it stays.
