there is this 2000 540i i want to buy, i went to go see it and when i started it, there was this really loud anoying engine knocking sound. it was coming from both sides of the engine, on top of the valve covers. the price is really cheap, so its hard to say no to buying it because i think maybe with repair it would be still worth it.

does anyone know what could this be? the car idles fine right at 400 rpm, but the knock didnt stop even having the car on for about 30 mins, i drove it around the block and parked it, the sound was still there.

i read on some other forums and i saw that it might be the chain guides/rails that deteriorate.

These cars all make a tapping noise that comes from the valve lifters. Sometimes you'll hear it really loud right on start up, and then it continues only at idle. If you raise the RPM's to over 1500 and the noise goes away its likely just the noisy lifter issue. The car will run forever like that and there does not seem to be a fix for it.

Depending on what the noise is, it could be VANOS or lifters. However, a number of V8s had rod knock. BMW said it was no big deal, but they did replace the rod bearings for those who complained the loudest.

Everybody poo-poos me, but I run 20W50 Castrol GTX, and my engine, at 120k, is as quiet as an electric motor, and the insides sparkle. Sure, mine is a non-VANOS engine, but, I'm just sayin".
