I recently bought a Z3, 2000 5-speed, 2.3? (says that on the trunk). I love it! it's a lifetime keeper. Only has 42,000 miles. Today, after a drive, making 3 stops without a problem, the key wouldn't come out of the ignition. I jiggled, turned the wheel, applied the hand brake firmly, put it in gear, pressed on the brake, etc. no luck. Then, I tried using gentle force with pliers, tapping the key with a small mallet at the same time. That worked : ). I'm afraid to use the car again until this problem is fixed!

What's the problem? What's the fix? Can anyone help a newbie? New ignition key and switch? Is that a handyman job?

Later ... I sprayed electronics cleaner into the ignition key-way and pushed the key in & out, wiping off excess each time. Then applied dry graphite lube into the key-way. All seems to be OK, but not great. The key is a occasionally a little sticky and the cylinder turns a little rough. What would you guys do from here if this were your issue?
