2001 Steering is the same as 2002, after I think March 2001. Those who chose to (or qualified to?)could get retro-fitted steering for their early builds of the 2001 steering..my steering is identical to the 2002 model, its a July build.

Sorry Rip but the 2002 330's steering is not the same as any 2001 model.

The Post above is 100% correct when it comes to the steering . . .

BTW like a lot of you know, I had a 2002 330i loaner last week for 3 to 4 days and I loved it.

The steering & suspension changes are a big improvement and this is coming from a person who loves his 2001 330Ci so when I say it's a big improvement, it really is !!!

I noticed no difference in the size of the sport seat but I did pick up on the fact that it is louder then my 2001, I thought this might be because I have a Coupe and the 2002 was a sedan . . . Maybe the coupe has more insulation ? ?

Also, I noticed that the throttle pedal for 2002 has less lag than my 2001

Alan-

I think they started using the new 2002 steering setup on some post-May 2001 cars. My steering is 2.8 L2L and very tight, whereas my friend (tam3) got the retrofit and it is still a bit lighter than mine, but I didn't test the L2L. My loaner 325 that I had definitely had the pre-retrofit steering, very light and fumbly.

The bottom line is that no one will ever know what BMW introduced and when, since it's such a confusing mess and no one can possibly test all production 3-series cars. ;)

Holy sh*t . . . this is getting out of hand . . . I am starting to think that maybe the REAL reason they re-did the steering on the early 2001's were because they had actual problems with the it . . . in other words, not just because everyone complained about it but maybe there is some other reason we have no idea about

Alee - what makes you think you have the same steering as 2002 ? ?

They feel identical to me (Drove a co-workers 2002 330i), if anything, the 2002 steering felt "lighter" but that could be because he has the sedan and I have the coupe. July build here, the 2002's began rolling off the assembly line about 5 weeks after my car was built.

Okay guys, here it is. According to the Dec. 2001 ETK the following Steering Rack p/n's and production run are as follows:

32 13 6 753 438 (04/99-04/01)

32 13 6 755 065 (04/01-09/01) Same rack as the E46 325ti -Compact

32 13 6 757 651 (09/01-on)

This whole steering thing is one of those things that's gonna fill an entire chapter in some future E46 reference book.

My Regensberg May-built car has heavier but 3.2 L2L. I've also seen my physical rack compared to VinceTopas' Munich May-built car, and we have physically different racks but I believe they perform identically.

YMMV

Interesting. After all, it looks like 2002 models have a different steering rack than 2001 models produced between April and September 2001.

2.8 turns lock-to-lock, and consistent feel compared with my 2002 E46 test drives.
I spoke to BMWNA and they said Alee does not have the 2002 rack, they explained that Alee has been harassing them and has threatened to Zaino every steering rack he comes across . . .

He also threatened to buy every M68 wheel in every dealers inventory and cause a M68 shortage if he does not get a 2002 retrofit.

what took you so loing to join this thread ? ?

Good job . . . but it is strange that Chris, Kaz, Alee & Rip have steering as tight as a 2002 330

They installed caller ID just for you.:D
When my car was on order, I called them at least once, if not twice a day, M-F, for the entire 6 weeks.

I know 1 girl recognized me by my voice, and I'm sure others did too but didn't want to say anything. :D
