Hi,
Have just bought the above car as a non runner. I'm totally unfamiliar with the gearbox but not a stranger to fixing cars.
battery is fully charged but as soon as key is put in ignition a continuous warning beeper sounds and there are strange symbols on the dash display. Indicator by the gear lever suggests that the car is in neutral and car can be moved

Welcome to Bimmerfest! I've moved your question to our E46 3 Series forum, you'll get more help in here. Can you post a picture of dash so we can see the warning lights you're talking about? Have you scanned for any engine diagnostic codes?
