Just purchased a used 2014 BMW 328d. Has 115K miles on it. Was one owner that drove a lot of highway miles for his job. The owner purchased the 100K full manufacturer extended warranty and the vehicle appears very well maintained. I got the car for a song which is why I jumped on the chance to own a diesel 328 that gets 42 mpg highway that originally cost $42K for about 75% off...the only drawback are the amount of miles and the fact this is out of warranty so any problems will be on me. Reaching out to see if there are any other 328d owners out there. What has been your experience. Should I expect another 115K miles out of the Bimmer? What have been the major mechanical issues you have experienced as an owner or over 100K miles on your 328d? Thanks!

My wife's 2014 328xd only has about 45K on it. The one you purchased is one of the higher-mileage ones I've heard about. Keep us informed.

If older models with different engines are any guide, watch the harmonic balancer (crankshaft pulley), turbo oil feed lines, and NOx sensors. They re-designed the DEF/SCR system, so I expect it to be more reliable than the older ones.
Thanks floydarogers for your reply. Are those the things your wife's 328xd had replaced thus far within the 45K miles? Imagine it was all under warranty. How about the EGR valve. Did you have that serviced as of yet? I hear that could be an issue as well on the F30 diesels. Seen several videos on YouTube that it is easy to DIY but I am fearful of doing damage but at the same time don't want to pay the Dealer $500 to remove spray cleaner, scrub with toothbrush and replace...

No, the engine on my wife's has not been touched. As I said, "older engines" were the exemplars I was using. I have not yet seen CBU mentioned as a problem on the N47, although I imagine that it might exist.
I've got a 2014 328d that now has 132,000 miles on it. I bought it new and have done all regular maintenance - great car, no major issues. Still get's 50 MPG on the highway.

I just had to replace the EGR at 130K, but that was cheap & easy - about $200.00 for a new OE BMW unit. The "cleaning" DIY on the internet did not work for me... That has been the only non-maintenance repair so far. If you can't confirm that a transmission fluid change has been done, do that first. ZF (the trans. manufacturer) says it should be done every 100K. If it's an X-drive model, get the transfer case fluid changed. I change the fuel filter about every 25K too.

I'm keeping mine for a while yet...
KWStandard thanks for sharing. Glad to hear these N47 are well worth it, are long lasting mules that love miles on them. Great point on the Trans Fluid replace. I have yet found a BMW service center that will share with me service history on a BMW despite me being the new owner. They all act as though it is super top secret stuff that will create world havoc if they share anything that was serviced on the vehicle. Any suggestions on how to check if the Transmission was service you can guide me toward? Did you do your own fuel filter or pay the BMW service guys for the replacement. Looks easy enough but I'm a bit fearful if something goes wrong...as it is like fuel and all. Ha!
You may be able to get a CarFax report - many dealers report the service they perform and the date/mileage at the service visit, often with specifics - but some don't... Unless the prior owner was an enthusiast, I would bet he did not get the transmission serviced - BMW says it's "lifetime" but the manufacturer says otherwise. It's not that costly...

I let the dealer change the fuel filter (and everything else) for the first 100k, but then did it myself the last time. Not hard to do, but you need the patience to remove the underbody cover to get to it.
Thanks again for the insight and guidance. I'll check into that CarFax. I did get a vehicle history report when I purchased but it just says maintenance without outlining what exact maintenance was completed. What do you think a fair price on transmission fluid replacement might be at the BMW Service center? Is it in the hundreds($300) or closer to thousands ($600+)? Thanks again!

Upper end. The fluid itself is like $40-$50 per quart, and it takes 6-8 quarts (upper end if you do a complete flush to replace it all). Also, you need a new pan & filter - $100 or maybe a bit less.
The 2014 you have likely has the older timing chain that was redisigned in 2015 due to sprocket issues shredding the chain. As these get higher mileage that issue is going to start rearing its head.

Agree with Floyd and get that tranny fluid changed (ZF recommends 60k interval) . Also the DPF will probably say it's done at around 150k. If your in an emissions check exempt state then I would get the emissions deleted (mine are gone as of 24k miles on a 16). We have seen one other person that had CBU already on a N47 so you likely have CBU at that mileage unless PO truly did all highway. Would be interesting to see the intake manny on this one.
very much appreciated "rbreding" for the great points and calling out these items.
CBU = "Carbon Build Up" and DPF = "Diesel Particulate Filter" seem to be VERY costly maintenance items. Do you think these things would have been covered by the PO pruchased 100K miles factory extended warranty/Maintenance items or are these on the owner to get done as part of regular vehicle maintenance when needed? Thank again for your replies.

DPF's didn't really fail until after 100K miles, even later. There's a newer SIB on cleaning it that seems to help solve some sooted-up conditions. It's covered by USA emissions warranties up to 80K.

CBU was covered by the original 4/50K warranty, and the CPO warranty, and the extended warranty. It costs $1200 (seems to have come down) and is completely the owner's maintenance problem. There is no set interval: my 335d has never had it done in 131K miles.

I ordered the ZF kit with a ZF pan/filter and 9 liters of ZF8 fluid for $335.00, and paid an Indy shop $200 for the labor, so ~$535.00 all in. It's not that complicated a procedure, but you have to measure the fluid temperature at different intervals and create the space under the car to do it. You could probably "guesstimate" the temps with a laser thermometer, but I wanted it done right, which requires the BMW service equipment the shop has. As a side note, it's not possible get all of the old fluid out during the normal change. I followed the suggestion of someone else (possibly on this Board) and drained a portion the old fluid from the old pan via the drain plug and replaced that volume with new fluid and ran the car for a week before replacing the pan/filter and another round of new fluid. The point was to get some new fluid in there to increase the volume of new fluid in the transmission after the change. Sounded logical... If you just do a regular pan/filter change you don't need 9 liters of fluid, like my kit had - most have 7 liters in a change kit. The shop said that he added 1 extra liter, so in my case with the extra fluid change, it took 10 liters total.

On the timing chain issue someone else mentioned, it is my understanding that none of the of the N47 engine versions sold in the US had the faulty (old) timing chain design issue. 2014 was the first year for the F30 N47 diesel in the USA.

Again, I had to change my EGR, but have not had any issues with Carbon Buildup or the DPF. 132K and still runs strong. My average MPG ** over the entire 132,000 miles ** is 40.0 as of today. I still get 50+ MPG on the highway.
Thanks again "KWStandard" for the advice on Trans Fluid. There are several Indi BMW shops in Orlando and I will ask them questions around measuring the fluid at different temps to determine which shop will do it right/best. Ive seen a bunch of videos online for DIY EGR and it looks pretty straight forward. I might just take the task myself removing and inspecting the condition of it. Since I have owned this 328d I am getting avg of 39 mpg between city and some interstate driving and I am pinching myself as I have NEVER experiencing such long intervals between filling up the tank and its only a 15 gal tank to boot! Love that Diesel advantage!!!
I had a 2016 328d that I put 50k kms on in 2.5 years, I liked the car, and seeing as how it seems doubtful BMW is going to continue offering the Touring in the future, I decided to swap it out early for a 2018. I have been regretting the move. My old car was quite dependable, it had the quirk of the engine light coming on at the end of long trips (3,000 kms) for a week or so, then it would go off, other than that, it was a reliable comfortable excellent all around car.

I picked up my 2018 in Munich July 6th, I have 5000kms on it, and the check engine light has been on for probably half of those KMs, I have also had the 'Driveline Malfunction' warning 3 - 4 times, this goes away when I restart the car.

I took the car to the dealer in Stuttgart, they could not replicate the problems after a reset. the engine light came back on later that day. I will not be keeping the car, kind of bums me out, but I use this car for long distance cross country trips, and being stranded somewhere in the middle of the country with all my stuff and 2 dogs is unappealing.

I think that if your car has been maintained, and has been problem free, it will probably continue to be that way. In my experience with most mechanical things, if you have problems out of the gate, they tend to continue, the inverse seems to be true as well.

Congrats! Same car here and love it. First diesel ever and I love the torque on this thing, that and the 600 miles range with a 14.5 gal tank is just unbelievable!

Got it with 42k miles CPO last year, 84k miles now and no issues.

Welcome! I have a 2014 328d. I love it. 66,000 miles. I bought it new in late 2013.

I did need the transfer case replaced twice. I would get hesitation that was linked to the transfer case. No issues since the replacement about $20k ago. I think this was rare though.

The brakes stink IMO. I'm due for rear brakes for the second time. First time at 37,000 (front and rear) and the second time now at 66,000 (rear only). I plan on replacing them myself with non-OEM. We'll see if that helps. My 2007 335 had almost 100k on it on the factory brakes.

High mileage especially on a diesel would not worry me too much. I'd be more worried about low miles on a d.

What where the hesitation symptoms you had? Every so often it feels like nothing happens when I hit the gas, like I won't make it through the intersection, then it lurches like a rocket and I zip across. I was chocking it up to throttle lag and adaptation. It is not there all the time and seems to be better if I reset the throttle. Thanks!

What you describe sounds more like turbo lag and the transmission being in a higher gear.
You just need push the ***8220;gas***8221; pedal a little more to make it drop a gear or two. But it seems you are already doing that this your ***8220;rocket***8221; reaction.

Edit: I see now you own an Xd, didn't see that from Tapatalk. So it's possible you are having some other issue.

I would notice very slight drops in power. They were just for a split second. It was only noticeable until moderate to high throttle such as merging onto the highway. I never would have connected the issue to the transfer case. It must be a known issue. The tech disconnected the transfer case and the issue went away.

The lag that you mention happens to me once in a while. I see someone else said to give it more gas or that you are in the wrong gear but that is not the case in my experience. I know what you are talking about.

One time was at a dead stop and put my foot right to the floor and almost nothing happened. It doesn't always happen but I have noticed it.

There is some lag build into the throttle. 3rd party companies sell kits to wire into the throttle to help with this issue.
