We must know the BMW hexadecimal Diagnostic Trouble Codes to be of any real assistance. ‘P’ & ‘U’ codes are generic OBD-II codes.

From the information presented, the root problem may be in communications bus. Reductant Control Module may wind up in count down to no start.

A failed/ low state of charge battery, can give a litany of error messages/ faults.

Test by installing a good battery, clearing codes, and seeing which ones come back.

 

I tried clearing the OBD codes from a foxwell scanner but they never cleared in the car, even after a battery disconnect, the codes remained set. I'm not sure if I have a bad scanner or one that will never work in this situation. Could you recommend one, please?

 

New battery OEM if possible, if not, a good AGM battery, connect and register. Should work fine again wouldn't recommend using it with a bad battery could damage some modules.

 

I've been looking at some but wasn't sure if a new battery would work. I'm not sure about the procedure and registering a battery. I only have a small OBD scanner that doesn't work well for BMW's. Is there a better program or diagnostic tool I could use for that? Would I need to clear the codes after installing the new battery? Do you know where I could get a procedure for the battery replacement? Thanks for the info!

 

Door Handle still not fixed ? I would do that first so the new Battery has a better chance in life looking fwd. Or as a min disconnect the problem handle for now.

 

Thanks for the info! Strangely enough, I think the door handle worked the other day after disconnecting and reconnecting the battery. I'll take your advice and just unplug it for now.

 

I got another reading from the car after changing the battery... Haven't registered the battery yet but will do that soon, I borrowed my friends scanner which doesn't allow for registering a battery.

I finally got the carly scanner, registered the battery and cleared the codes. Then I received about 105 codes. Cleared them again and read 71 codes this time. After repeating, I always receive 71 codes at the minimum.

It seems that they all have to do with the DSC, ICM, no wheel speed info provided anywhere. The codes are all coming right back. I'm wondering if my best bet is a bad fuse or getting the ISTA and resetting the modules individually. There are a few INFO codes that mention fault memory is fully used up and can't be cleared. If there is no response from the CAN controllers then the codes can't be cleared from carly, does that make sense?

Door Handles run off the DSC System Fuse so check that first.

Thanks MunichMark and everyone else for the help! I found the fuse in the glove box, number 2 rating 5. It blew whenever the handle was plugged in so I unplugged the 4 pin to the handle and got one on order. Everything is much better in the car now.

 

So the blown fuse fixed all 71 code u had pending??? Because I am at the same stage as u discribe previously

 

Yes, that fuse is responsible for the door handles and the DSC, all of those codes are coming from the DSC. When its on and running, it will turn every other computer in the car back on and most if not all of those codes will go away. My problem handle was drivers rear but yours may be different.
