I have never thought it worthwhile to update the mapping because of the cost. When we drive to places like NY or Boston where traffic conditions change rapidly and where there are many routing alternatives, have always found Google Maps to be much better at routing. We keep the navigator on but either my wife or I monitor google maps on our phones. It may be that the navigation has improved in later models; I can only speak for the systems in a 2013 3 series & 2014 X1. I also understand that the 2016 3 series will offer free upgrades for 3 years. Following is quote from press release.
"The navigation maps are automatically updated free of charge for a period of three years via the embedded SIM cards"

This is true for any new car with NBT2 Evo Head Unit.

Is there any way to check which roads are included in the 2016-1 update? I've got a few Garmins with lifetime updates, and as an example a new I15 expressway direct access ramp in San Diego, which was completed summer 2014, still hasn't shown up on their most recent update :thumbdwn:

HERE makes the maps (both for Garmin and BMW), and that onramp has been visible on their website at least since January. Makes you wonder why those maps are so far behind compared to the map data source.

Of course if someone with the 2016 maps is willing to check if the I15 Miramar College DAR is there or not I'd much appreciate that :)
I just found out that my car accepted the 2016-1 maps without the need for an FSC :D Must be because it was built just before those maps came out.

However that onramp isn't on there either. In 2016-2 hopefully.

Please explain this NBT2 unit.
NBT2 Evo is the Next Generation Head Unit for 609 Professional Navigation, which replaces NBT, which replaced CIC, which replaced CCC.

If you want to see NBT2 Evo Head Unit, go look at an F23 with 609 Professional Navigation.

Completed 2016 NAV upgrade without the dealer

Just completed 2016-1 NAV upgrade(from 2014-2) thanks to Shawn Sheridan's contact. The gentlemen that Shawn had me contact( not mentioning his name due to privacy) is excellent to work with because he answers your questions quickly and accurately. He knows this procedure inside out. I did not do everything correctly my own fault. Without his help. this would not have worked because I didn't follow the instructions exactly. You need WinZip which I had but I unzipped all files. Not necessary, you only need to unzip part 1 which contains the entire upgrade all in one 25Gig file. Once you unzip the file, copy just the files underneath the main NAVD folder to a 32G flashdrive which are 4 folders and 3 other files. Then, once you stick the flashdrive in the USB in the armrest, the upgrade comes up automatically and takes about 40 minutes so keep the car running. Hopefully, there are some new features which make it all worth it.
