Dear kind folks,

After trying to buy an M550i and getting bitch slapped in this market with dealers hiking prices, reneging commitments etc., I am now considering a 2019 M5 with about 30K odd miles. I am not an affluent man

and am going to be doing a loan on this baby for 6 yrs. Likely will take me all to pay off, and am at the top end of my budget. With that said, M5s look less overpriced than the M550is, and hey, it's an M5.

Simple question: should i go for it, or no? What should I look out for, what questions should I ask of the dealer? How important is a warranty on this- as, of course, that would mean I have to budget for it. Dealer cannot give a CPO. Carfax looks like it has regular maintenance- although battery charging system was repeatedly checked, and engine/powertrain computer module. Don't know if that's just routine, or indicative of some underlying concern.

Please advise! And thank you.

Sam555,

At bit ago I purchased a 2018 F90 M5 with ~13k miles. I had conducted a significant search for the right vehicle. I looked at and test drove quite a few vehicles; 2018 M550i, ‘18-‘19 M5s, Audi S8s and a ’19 M4. All are very nice vehicles. In the end, I settled on the M5.

It is not a cheap ride, and it has the typical higher costs of owning a BMW - Michelins are >$2000 a set and even the oil changes will set you back … takes 11qt. But, then again, neither is the M550I.

I have owned some speedy cars … a D4 Audi A8 Sport with APR Tune, a lightly tuned B8.5 Audi RS5, F32 BMW 440 xdrive and a ‘19 S550 Mustang GT. I say this because I thought I knew quick … I did not. The F90 M5 is quick … it is stupid quick. No really, with the proper set-up you are the apex predator on the street. You will get an approving nod from those who understand what eh quad exhaust and winged mirrors mean … and you will hurt the feelings of racer-boys with their cats and steeds. It handles well and is quite predictable. The CC brakes will stop you like hitting a brick wall.

The ride is comfortable in a European way. You will not mistake the ride for a A8, but I have done a few 7hr trips without issue … and the massaging seats are not just simple vibrating motors. The B&W sound system is beyond imagination, and worth the spend. I thought the Audi B&O was the best, and found out I was mistaken.

But you asked about taking a vehicle without a warranty, and the simple answer is no, not with any high performance, hot-VE V8 … M550i or M5 or S6 or E63 or … . You do not have to take a BMW one, and can likely find a 3rd party drive train plus for cheaper and better term. You are comparing the two vehicles, and they do have two very different variants of the same x6344 engine. The S63B44T4 engine is quite a bit more robust and reliable when pushed versus the N63 or the earlier T0-T3. You can get close to M5 power with a M550i and a Dinan tune, but it will still not be an M5. Below are two links that can help you understand the two engines and their differences.

Hope this helps …
