I checked my power steering fluid three months ago and I noticed that it was gray, gritty and smelled burnt. but I havent had any problems with the power steering. Can anyone tell me whats going on? I searched past threads and couldnt find anything about this in particular.

Just means it's old. You should go ahead and flush it, you don't want old fluid circulating around. It uses ATF, so it should be red and clean.

Thanks. Ill be doing it this weekend on spring break. one more question I dont have my bentley manual with me in my dorm, but it will explain how to DIY the flush right??

It will explain a way to remove it. I don't know if it's the best way or not, but check out bimmerdiy.com and compare it to the Bentley and see which is more doable given your tools/workspace.
