What do you get for the extra $2000-3000 or so? Consumer Guide says the 528 is #600 heavier, little longer and wider, and repairs e.g. new clutch more expensive. But the engine specs seem very similar. (I am posting the same question in the E36 section.)

Well, other than the fact that these two cars are completely different from each other, I'd say nothing! ;)

All you need to do is drive each car for 10 minutes and you'll clearly see the differences and decide if a 5er is worth the premium over the 3er.

Why exactly is a clutch more expensive on the 528 vs 328? I'm an ex e34 owner, and i used an M3 clutch on my '93 525i, it was cheaper than the 525i clutch!
