328d 0-60 reports

I searched threads here for real-world reports of 0-60 times for the 328d and am not seeing anything. A search of Youtube also revealed no videos. BMW press and all the car rags that review hold the company line of 0-60 in 'just over' 7 seconds. How 'just over'?

If you own one of these and have a metered 0-60 sprint please share. BMW has a history of underselling sprint times. Perhaps with the 328d the reverse is true.

To be fair, 0-60 is not the best representation of how the car drives. It is more like the red light derby, which would be damaging to the car. Most people don't drive like this. It is why a 335d is more appealing as a regular driver than other "performance" cars.

Diesels tend to do better with short bursts of power such as in passing as in 80-140 km/h sprints, a spec that the euro e90 335d did better than a similar M3.

But I digress.....

I just googled for "320d f30 0-100km". Most videos were in the 7.6s-8s time frame (although it's kind of hard to tell in many instances.) Remember, the other-world 320d is what we get as a 328d, and 100kph is 62mph.

I just picked up a 328d M-Sport last weekend, but have not checked 0-60 times. I'll be heading out today to do some last minute Christmas errands, so I'll put it in Sport mode and see what it can do!! I have a few iOS apps, so I'll try them all and look for some consistent times.

I'll let you know!

PS. Extremely pleased with the 46mpg around town!!! That's about 13mpg better than the 335d with the JBD!!

0-60 can be relevant when merging into traffic. Or you have to power ahead for turn lanes.
Old diesels couldn't merge for the best of them. They just smoked people out so they backed
off. When hit the onramp the x5d diesel is floored and its up to speed without a sweat.
So would think a 4 in the small 3 would be adequate but need to see the numbers.

That was one reason I traded a 5 series sport wagon years ago. You could floor that car
at a light change and it took awhile to get going. A corolla could get ahead of you before
the 6 could get winding. Seemed like german cars were more engineered for top
speed autobahn driving not usa urban maneuverings

What motivated me to start the thread were equal measures of curiosity and the dearth of information regarding the real world performance of the 328d. Our 335d's are going to last forever and just about the time when my warranties expire there will be a plethroa of 328d's coming off of leases. For my part it makes my day when a V6-equipped minivan pulls over two lanes to try to jump the light and hit my ramp before me. Sometimes I even wave 'bye' when they inevitably have to whip in behind me while rapidly receding. The 0-60 romp therefore represents the most objective (versus subjective) measure by which to compare vehicles that suit my driving experience. 7 seconds flat represents middling performance to me - good enough to pull in front of most grocery getters and even fast cars driven inexpertly or wanly but not nearly good enough to keep pace with let alone triumph over a bevy of starndard passenger vehicles. 8 seconds means you can best a committed Prius driven with the 'green button, on.

Glad to hear that the mpg ratings for the 328d are sound. Those numbers, if they prove durable, are impressive indeed.

Sorry - bad editing. 'Our 335d's will NOT last forever' is what I meant to say. I will probably test drive an A6 TDI as well as rhe 535d and keep an eye on the 328d. Interesting to hear that the 328d can also use the JBD tune. That would probably bring the 0-60 time back down into the 6's if the performance gain matches experiences with the JBD and the 335d.

Hey Tony. When are you looking to test drive the A6 TDI and 535d?

Is the RWD version of the 535d available in N.America or do we only get the AWD version?

I'm currently using an A6 2.0T as my daily driver. I'd be very interested in reading impressions of the A6 TDI especially in terms of how it compares to the 535d.

Is it confirmed that BMW will market a PPK for the 328d? I see the F30-based PPK for the 335i but speculation alone for the 328d. That'd be neat to see.

The PPK is available in Europe, etc. for the 320d, same engine as ours so that's a good sign. It was just released in 9/12 for the F30 and no confirmation yet that it is coming over here. They also released the PPK for the E90 320d. Here is a good thread on that: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=562073. (We won't be needing the upgraded torque converter that they needed on the 177hp 320d because ours has been upgraded.) Here is an excellent review of the PPK for our engine: http://showcars.co.za/bmw/bmw-perfor...pgrade-review/

It occurred to me that there's a good chance that the PPK will be released here for the 328d because there is currently no 3-series diesel with more power being marketed in NA, so they won't be afraid of cutting into the stronger engine's sales.

I'm either ignorant or too much champagne on Boxing Day (it's 10PM where I am)

PPK=Power Performance Kit. Manufactured by BMW's M Division, so it's really MPPK.

+1 post Stevehecht. Thanks for link to the 320d PPK install review. Interesting that not only is the ECU remapped but that a larger intercooler and fan are required. I would be much more open to the concept of 328d with something likely to bump the power closermto that delivered by the 335d. I am just to hooked on that launch thrill to part so easily with it.

How 'bout one to boost the 335d to an M550d?

I'm estimating around $2K including installation, based on numbers I've seen for this PPK in England.
