Hi. I am new to Bimmerfest. Hoping to get some help with a recent problem with my 2011 328i. It has developed a loud interference type sound even when the radio is off. I wouldnt quite descrive it as a buzz, which I've been reading about in other threads; its more like an omnipresent tone. It is constant, and does not come and go. It is going to the dealer in a few days to get checked out, the tech guy has already suggested it may be an issue with the amplifier. I might add that the CD player is also on the fritz, it plays CDS but there is a lot of background noise when it is running. I am outside the warranty timeframe by the way. So a couple of questions. If it is the amplifier, could I just buy an aftermarket one and have it installed, or am I captive to a BMW brand item that would require the dealer to install? I mentioned the out of warrranty issue right? If I were to have an entirely new radio and amp installed by someone other than the dealer, is there a coding issue involved? I sense an expensive fix coming an d want to see what my options might be. Thanks!

You need to identify your system

You need to identify your system
Do you have idrive / Nav
Do you have the Pro Radio
Which of the three sound systems do you have

Stereo
Hi Fi
Or Logic 7

If you have the Pro Radio there was a recall out on that for random noise.

The Radio or Idrive is never really off as its used for some of the car alarms

see entry 55 in the above.
on the later models .

Has it been rainy where you live because water in the amplifier area is
a pretty common cause of amplifier failure.

You can avoid the dealer if you do a lot of homework and are somewhat skilled.

If you want to modify the system look here

I don't believe the dealer will help you with anything aftermarket.

As far as the ease of modifying the sound system

Hi Fi easiest of modify
stereo slightly harder due to no tweeters and factory eq
L7 hard because of the fiberoptic interface between amp and head unit or idrive.
and the number of channels and speakers.
