Pretty bad. They pull 2 car lengths on 6spd ZHP's up to 70-ish MPH, stock for stock. They pull like animals all the way up to redline, where your torque curve will start a rugged descent.

eh. I disagree. The convertible has a 300-400lb weight disadvantage.

I say your 330Ci could take it assuming the same skilled drivers.

...but...you're talking about a straight line? How boring.

He also didn't mention transmissions. BTW Kris, I just found this:

3.0 M3 vs 330i ZHP
Yeha, it doesn't mention transmissions... but once again, the world convertible is the most obvious point.

My car was head to head with my buddy's 95 M3 on the freeway. Nearly identical...

Sorry guys my car is an auto but i would obviously would use the tiptronic mode...

His M3 does not feel that fast?? And yes its carrying 321 bhp.

I used to have a z3 M Roadster 321bhp but i lost control in the wet and hit 5 cars ... : (

One of my mates has an old 225bhp audi s3 and he was smoked by a 330ci. But now he has the new Audi s3 and that is fast.

Steptronic isn't any faster if you're just putting your foot to the floor anyway - both will shift at redline..

Good catch v33, yes, if he has the 321bhp M3, he'll definitely blow your doors off.

auto.consumerguide.com gave me something different Kris.

2-door coupe: 2866 lbs.
2-door convertible: 2990 lbs.

If anything, steptronic makes it slower because you don't shift as close as the computer. Automatics are slower than manual because you can't launch hard, powershift and they have longer ratios.

Both of those are way off. The E36 M3 is most definitely >3100lbs. There's a truck scale near my house, I've taken lots of friends there (several E36 M3s). One that I recall was 3260lbs, the same weight as my 99 328i.

My ZHP weighs 3380 on the scale :(. My wife's S2000 weighs 2780. My buddy's NB Miata came in at 2300.

I dont find those numbers hard to believe. My 1980 suburban weighs 7000lbs empty. Weighed my 1980 or so rx7 and it was 2400 best I remember.

U.S.-spec E36 M3 pulls me slightly down long straights, so I think I'd be even or slightly faster than a convertible. Euro-spec M3 would be long gone, vert or not.

So cool how they kept the weight down on those cars - my brother's S2000 is a lot of fun. Makes you wonder what an Elise would be like to drive.....
