CEL two weeks ago. Pulled a 4D16

Dropped the car off at the dealer for that, plus some odds and ends (MAF rec all, airbag recall)

Tech ran required test plans, BMW tech services decided it needed:
Both Pre and Post NOX sensors
SCR Catalytic Converter
Exhaust Temp sensor
Reprogram

Total cost on the warranty claim was $3637. I paid $50.

I also had three recall items on the list, two completed:
MAF was replaced.
Driver airbag done
"No passenger airbags at this time"

Unfortunately this doesn't do a damn thing for anyone trying to deal with their own 4D16 codes- BMW just replaced everything that might have been part of the issue! My tech buddy was not in house when I picked it up, so I couldn't debrief as usual. Testplans results were sent to the mothership to review, and they made the call.

I'm a bit over $2k ahead on the warranty. 89k miles today.

Light on the hard data I know....

Good.

My car had this set repaired before my ownership. Exact same list:

Both Pre and Post NOX sensors
SCR Catalytic Converter
Exhaust Temp sensor

On the positive note, at least your air bag won't kill you and will perform its intended purpose of keeping you alive. That's a win for you anyway you put it.

Yesterday, connected Rheingold, looking for anything battery related - high discharge warning.

Observed some faults stored in memory.

One of them was "4D16 SCR system, efficiency". No CEL was thrown, of course.
This is with new NoX sensor (pre-cat) replaced a few weeks ago. Properly calibrated in Rheingold.

Details tab for that fault has this info:

Fault description Monitoring of NOx efficiency (total efficiency range). Monitoring links SCR efficiency rating monitoring operations of efficiency rating range 1 and efficiency rating range 2.

If a fault occurs in one of these two efficiency rating monitoring operations, the appropriate fault code is set.

Condition for fault identification Monitoring takes place whenever the preconditions for SCR efficiency rating monitoring operations of efficiency rating range 1 and efficiency rating range 2 have been satisfied (depending on temperature range).

Control unit voltage: 9.5 V to 16 V.

Condition for fault memory entry The fault is entered if it has been detected more than the following number of times (fault debouncing counter): 4

Action in service 1. Check filling level of AdBlue, top up AdBlue.

2. Check that metering valve and urea/water mixer are correctly installed and check for dirt contamination. Clean metering valve with water. Perform metering quantity test.

3. Check for the quality of the dosed out AdBlue.

4. Check with SCR catalytic converter diagnosis system.

Fault effect and breakdown warning None

Driver information Malfunction indicator lamp

Service instruction - Check the function of the metering valve and clean with water, if necessary.

- Nitrogen oxide sensor upstream or downstream of SCR catalytic converter is implausible (note is a corresponding fault code entry), renew sensors.

- SCR catalytic converter faulty, perform system test with SCR catalytic converter.

Carry out the following service functions depending on which components have been renewed:

- AdBlue: SCR system adjustments and adaptations, AdBlue (long-term adaptation factor)

- Nitrogen oxide sensors: SCR system adjustments and adaptations, SCR exhaust sensor system

- Diesel particulate filter: Diesel particulate filter: register exchange.

- SCR catalytic converter: SCR catalytic converter: register exchange.

- Metering module: SCR system adjustments and adaptations, SCR metering module

- SCR tank system: SCR system adjustments and adaptations, SCR tank system

The fault cannot be deleted until the DDE has detected a functioning SCR system. For this purpose, complete a conditioning run until the Check Control message goes out. The fault memory can then be deleted.

I guess that's where I made the mistake by going with Routee66 instead of BMW warranty. I did read extensively and everyone seemed to recommend Route66 (they don't cover emissions and that's the big issue).

Is it possible to get BMW warranty now (Route66 will refund). I'm at 6 yrs and 48K.

Yeah, given my issues with the 2010 I lemoned, I wanted something that covered emissions.

No, 4/50 was the limit

Ard, How can I buy BMW extended warranty? Thinking about to pick up 2011 64k miles this saturday. Thanks.
You cannot...you are outside of the BMW new car warranty period of 4 years or 50k miles

Go to local BMW.

just to clarify, if your BMW is out of the original 4/50, you can still buy an official BMW extended warranty, albeit with higher pricing. (There is a drop-dead date of when you can buy this after original 4/50 expiration) Further, a BMW extended is a competitive financial product sold through the finance department at each franchise. As such, like buying a car, you don't HAVE to buy it at your local dealership. Not all dealerships are willing to sell you one without seeing your car first hand, but I know of at least 2 in CA that will sell it to anyone in the country if you provide appropriate documents online.

As a buyer of this warranty, it always helps you to call around and get the best price possible. There's a MSRP with markup for this product just like anything sold at a dealership, so you can find these at slight discounts.

Now if you already have a CPO tag, you likely won't be able to buy another BMW extended warranty. That 2011 if not CPO'd might just be outside of the drop-dead date for an official BMW warranty.

Thanks for great info. I"ll try to shop around from local dealers. I just got a quote from carchex for 3 years/37000 miles for $4469. Much appreciated.
Step one would be to see if your car is too old to be eligible for BMW warranty. Call VIN into local dealership

Was the driver air bag a temp new but bad bag or a final answer?

Do you have a reference for this??

You can buy the BMW 'power train only' warranty after the 4/50, but it is somewhat limited.

The Gold and Platinum plans have (or had according to you post) a hard limit.

They had the driver bag available and replaced it. The passenger bag will be done later

I'm still confused on what it'll take to get my airbag replaced. Obviously, it doesn't appear they were calling you in anytime soon to do the bags, but when you need work done in the shop, all the sudden it is available?

I know you are out of California emission warranty. Had this occurred under 7 years or 70 k miles, it seem to me it should be covered under those warranty? Is that correct assumption or not.

I think what ard got replaced is the "temp new" or the interim repair (newly manufactured inflator), not the final replacement . . . see attached Q&A.

I don't think the final solution is out yet.
