6 Series GT

Rumors have been floating for a long time but we have gotten our first confirmation that the 5 Series Gran Turismo is being re-branded as the 6 Series Gran Turismo in 2018. Production for the new BMW 640i xDrive Gran Turismo starts in July 2017 and a draft of the new ordering guide is available now.

Dealers have been notified of initial allocations and there are some important details including

  • The M Sport Package (ZMP) does not have an all season tire offering. It only has 2 wheels
    with performance tires.
  • Every HEA order is required to have either Harmon Kardon surround sound system (688) or Bowers & Wilkens Diamond Surround Sound System (6F1).
Now that rumors are official, what do you think? Does the name change make any difference to you?

I think the really interesting question is what now happens to the 6 Series GC (4GC as well) ;;
... AND does this mean the 3 Series GT becomes the 4 Series GT? :dunno:

6 gt

Is this just an excuse to increase the price substantially, since 6 series 4-doors cost significantly more than 5 series?
The F10 based GT has a base price nearly $10,000 more than the 5 series. So I suspect there will be some model-driven price change but I bet BMW will soften that by raising the level of "standard equipment".

It'll still be a tough sell in the USA!

Maybe this creates room in the 5er lineup for the return in the US of the 5 touring.

Most Americans have a difficult time paying a premium for a hatch. It didn't help that the 5GT was portly. Although it will be easier to breakout the sales number for the 6GT since it will presumably be called out in the monthly sales figures once the 6GC ceases production. We'll get to see how poor of a seller that model really is.

It must have done well enough to justify BMW's continuing the model and selling it in the US . . . (I'm personally not a fan of the style, but apparently my tastes are rather contrarian)

If you market BMW as fun, manual as cool, wagon as practical, instead of holding back models and subsidize auto, people will listen. But apparently, according to roundel profiler, dumb fat arsed Americans deserve none :dunno:

"Poor seller" also means more exclusivity for the owners who do decide to go down this route. There's nothing I hate more than seeing a near duplicate copy of my car driving down the road...

It was $9k less expensive last year as the 535i. Glad we bought ours when we did, it is the best road trip vehicle we have owned due to the amenities not found in the previous touring. We loved our wagon and would have bought another if it was offered because it offers better cargo versatility versus the GT. As bostongio states, it is nice to have a "unique" car as we have only seen our exact same exterior optioned vehicle three times in 4 yrs of ownership...kind of cool.

Take a gander at this video. BMW didn't shy away from the rear end. I think they should be proud:
https://youtu.be/rKdij_u-dnc

I used to tell my wife to bury me with my 5GT but I'm thinking I might make the move to the 6 GT LCI!!!

To my eye, I see a lot of changes in the styling end to end that should please the sheet metal crowd. In the driving shots, it strikes me as looking a lot more like a 6 than a 5 GT. A LOT MORE. I actually don't care for the MY17 6 Coupe. Add the ability to drop the 6GT at the push of the button and BMW's placated command seating haters. Interior looks plenty luxurious and plenty of rear legroom (probably not as much headroom).

RETAINED:
5 doors
Split console lid
Beautiful M-sport Steering wheel
Frameless windows
Ultra wide opening doors
Command Seating
Long Ride comfort
built in rear window shades

GONE:
That totally awesome drawer above the radio perfect for badges, pens, glasses. UGH!
Sealed cargo hold
Trick Trunk (replaced by speed foil [insert twirling finger here])

NEW:
Coupe styling more like the 3GT
Adjustable ride height suspension
iDrive with gesture crap
Other connected stuff
Semi autonomous driving
Both cargo shelves removable and storable
Locking hinge for raised trunk bed

FWIW, IAS, DHP and Adjustable suspension are bundled in one package.

There's probably more differences .... YMMV
