540i Muffler Delete
OK so I'm dug around the forum a bit on this but no definite answer. If I do a muffler delete will the car actually lose power or/and torque like some say, if so why. I mean removing the muffler isn't going to create back pressure and contrary to belief back pressure does not help engines so what gives, just a myth or fact?

But no lose of power right. I know that running a straight pipe from the headers and increasing the diameter might make the vacuum effect less but I'm not even touching the cats or anything before. Just those big cans all the way at the back. Also what if I remove one of them only. I just wanna get rid of one so when I fit the M tech bumper I can have an exhaust pipe coming of the place for it.
You will not loose power it is a myth.
The more you make the exhaust flow...the more power you will gain. A true dual can hurt performance but something like an H, X or Y pipe will benefit.
Obviously if you delete everything like headers and all yeah you will see power loss. You can really really improve these exhaust systems though they are bottle neck for the cars.

I know that faster exhaust flow equals higher power, but what about those drag race cars that just have 8-12inch mandrel piping as headers?
To answer OP's question: Anything deleted after the cats won't cause a loss of power in the E39. Before the cats is up for debate.

An exhaust system acts like a filter. The bigger you make it and better it flows at high rpm, but there is a limit before you run into issues at low rpm and starting. I have high flow mandrel bent stepped headers on my 540 with racing 100 cell cats to 3" stainless all the way back...I saw pretty large gains with these on the order of 21rwhp of gain and about 18rw ft-lbs.

Stepped headers are designed to be broader band...and 4-2-1 equal length stepped headers would be the broadest band working best at all rpms. Only one that sells those is Dinan and they are 8k!!!! The leading small tubes give you the pressure you need for low rpm and then they progressively get larger which allow the higher flow at high rpm.

Are your A1 headers 4-2-1 stepped headers? If so, how much did you pay for them, if you don't mind me asking?
What do you think about the schmiedmann headers or the supersprint headers?
BTW, by any chance would you know the cell count of the OEM cats on the 540i, how about the popular magnaflow prevanos CA carb certified cats?

No mine are not 4-2-1 the A1s are 4-1 stepped headers. The A1s were $1275. The A1s are a very similar design to the supersprints (also 4-1) but are each a solid header ad therefore no spring collector device on the A1s. This makes them harder to install unfortunately.
I don't know the schmiedmann headers. The supersprints are ok. They are easier to install than others with the separate tubes but I hear the spring loaded collectors can start to leak.
The cell count of the stock cats are 800 cell and on the vanos motors there are 2 per bank. I am not too sure about the CARB certified cats and what they are.

E39 wagon.Chopped mine off last week. Sounds great and I dont know but it feels like it gained power not like a crazy amount but anytime the car loses weight its going to do better. My mpg also seems normal
So if you chop a muffler off, JUST the muffler that's near the back end and NOT touch anything else (leave the resonators alone and such), will you lose a noticeable (or if any) amount of low rpm torque? Basically, same question as the OP. I am asking regarding any E39...525i all the way to M5.
No power loss. You actually might gain a few horses and have a nicer sound.
Minimal loss or gains to even notice with just a muffler delete. Ridding the car of both the mufflers and Y resonator should free up a considerable amount of weight though. That might be the best reason to do it, not to mention the amazing exhaust tone!
You won't lose power I first had my resonator deleted then the rear silencer an had it like that for a couple months. But know I straight piped it from the resonator delet back to this. And I used all stainless the tips are 24inch long blast pipe style it gives it a crazy sound still all 2.5 inch pipe an no lose of power

Has anyone done a side exit exhaust? I have that done to my 1996 cobra because of all the suspension stuff done to it. I thought it would be cool to do that to my 540 as well.
Loving the look! I have a guy at the local muffler shop ready to do this for me this week... cant wait!
