6WB Retrofit - Coding Required

I finally got around to installing my 6WB MFID Instrument Cluster. :D

Since mine was a brand new virgin Kombi, no EEPROM work was necessary to blank the donor car's mileage and VIN. Install was a breeze, and Coding was just a matter of adding 6WB to the VO, changing VO Production date to 1211, and VO Coding DKombi and HU_CIC.

Since my car does not have ECO Pro, I get just the Comfort and Sport mode displays.

Upgrading from the basic Kombi to either 6WA or 6WB is a dramatic improvement, and worth every penny. If I already had 6WA though, I personally would stick with it rather than invest in 6WB.

Yes, you can code it with E-Sys. If it is new and not used, you can do just as I wrote in my original post, which is add 6WB to the VO, change VO Production date to 1211, and VO Code DKombi and HU_CIC.

Hi shawn,
I also installed the 6WB MFID Instrument Cluster.
But after FA coding, there is no cafd in DKOMBI at the SVT area.
So, I can not code DKOMBI module...

All I have done is as follows.
1) Connect E-Sys and Read FA from car at the Coding Function in Expert mode.
2) Save FA and Edit FA
3) Add 6WB to SALAPA and calculate FP with no error.
4) Save FA
5) Select Expert mode, VCM function and select FA.xml file at the Vehcle Order.
6) Select the VCM Master tab and click the Write FA FP button.
7) Select Coding function and read FA and Activate FA and Read SVT.

My cluster get error it should be updated when ignition on.
The Tachometer and speedometer does not respond when engine on.

I am very glad if you give me some advice...

You need to try and inject CAFD into Kombi ECU:

Connect => Read FA (VO) => Activate FA (VO) => Read SVT (VCM) => Left-Click on DKombi => Click on "Detect CAF for SWE" => Select the CAFD from latest I-Level => Select OK => Right-Click on DKombi (the ECU itself not the underlying CAFD) => Select CODE.

This does look absolutely amazing. Have a 2014 LCI on the wa and the 6WA looks nice but damn the 6WB is amazing.

I would imagine swapping these would void the warranty? I would consider selling my 6WA and getting 6WB - assuming I could sell the 6WA and they could reset the data easily.

Edit: Thinking about it more and I have the HUD so I doubt I will be looking away from that much.

Here is a nice comparison of the three clusters.

It will not void warranty. It is OEM part designed for your chassis.

And you will not want to sell your 6WA. If you retrofit 6WB, you will need to swap 6WA back in for any dealer service that involves ISTA/P programming.

I retrofitted mine, and its no big deal. I can swap clusters in under 5 minutes.

Shawn..

Is it just swapping the cluster and VO Coding the Kombi enough?

As i understood, the best is to use a NEW one. Due to the mileage which is already on the cluster, right?

Thx

Then you need to first also blank VIN and Mileage in EEPROM with an EEPROM Programmer, and then Flash Kombi to write car VIN to it.

#33 ·
No, they wont do it. Dealers will only do official BMW retrofits, and there is no official 6WB retrofit. And even if they could, they would NEVER do it with a used module.

#35 ·
Yes. It is stored in CAS, and whichever one, Kombi or CAS has higher mileage in it, it pushes the higher mileage to the other one.

#38 ·
can i then use a cluster which has less mileage then mine, and get it flashed from my dealer with my VO? (the xml file)?

#39 ·
You should get a used cluster with less mileage if at all posssible. However, doing so doesn't change anything with the Dealer. They are not going to touch a Kombi retrofit, new or used, and if used, regardless of mileage.

Shawn, would you know why the 6WB is showing that service is past due and needs break fluid and oil change but the 6WA isn't. The car was just in service with 6WA installed, when I got it back I put 6WB back in but now it's saying I need service again. I don't really care, but the issue is that it's sending a signal to the dealership telling them I need service.

The CBS records didn't update after 6WB went back in car. I am not sure why. Did you try VO Coding it again?

i took a picture of it after i found it and tested it:

but i can't find where i wrote the fdl name down, so i will have to go back and figure it out again. :(

i will do it tonight or tomorrow and will post back.
I went back and tested this, and the FDL Code is MOTORLEISTUNG_ENABLE = aktiv to enable it. The meter scale units can be changed from kW to HP from the iDrive Settings menu:

Even when I changed it to HP, it still showed a digital readout of 80, unlike this picture below that is showing 480:

In all cases, it does not appear to be working because it is always maxed out with little or zero RPM's.

i will also be looking for fdl code for the digital speed speed display inside the comfort / comfort+ mode as seen here above the needle base:

View attachment 411371
The code for this one is DIGITAL_TACHO_ENABLE:

It can be set for either mph or kmh and is independent of the main speedometer's unit of measure as shown in the picture with the main speedometer in mph, and the digital speed in kmh.

It is a nice addition to the Comfort / Comfort+ display, but redundant on the Sport / Sport+ display.

Sport Mode: Power meter at RPM's gauge lower section

I went back and tested this, and the FDL Code is MOTORLEISTUNG_ENABLE = aktiv to enable it. The meter scale units can be changed from kW to HP from the iDrive Settings menu:

Hi Shawn,

Regarding the power meter in Sport Mode at the Rpm's gauge lower section, I've been able to activate (through setting MOTORLEISTUNG_ENABLE = aktiv) but, same as described in your post, it doesn't become functional. In addition to this, the kW value displayed (80 kW) does not correspond to my real motor power available (135 kW in my case).:dunno:

Were you able to achieve any improvement at this respect?, I mean, making it active by showing same live data as in the NBT displays for Power (SPA_SPORT_ENABLE) and configuring as well the correct maximum Power level at the meter? Any further indication and help from your side will be more than welcome, as this seems to be an amazing feature.

By the way, thanks for your support, 6WB retrofit became really easy and as of today 100% functional. Of course trying to improve it a bit as well with amazing additional features as indicated above.

Thanks in advance and best regards,

No. This is different.

BC_DIGITAL_V enables the Digital Speed in the BC Cluster, controlled by the BC Stalk. I already have that FDL Coded and working fine.

The digital speed I am talking about is displayed inside the Speedometer Gauge at the base of the needle; not the BC Cluster.

I do think the meter scale is dependent on certain engines, but it also didn't work for me when I accidentally fdl coded it on 50.3. It showed the same thing you are getting now. When I added the msport edition vo code and changed to a newer date on 51.1it then worked by vo coding.

I didn't know what the fdl code was so I didn't try to fdl code it on 51.1.

Actually now that I think about it, my kombi is still on 50.3. The rest of my car is on 51.1. I still haven't gotten a chance to flash my 6wb yet.
