My understanding is that all BMW keys come pre-programmed from the factory and require a VIN to order, so there'd really be no way to get an i8/7 series key coded for another car without knowing someone important at BMW.
The new "smart" keys do look pretty cool, but they are brutally expensive (definitely over 500) and you have to plug them in every night to charge them up. Personally, I'd rather stick with the normal brick key that never leaves my pocket.
