Hello family! I currently drive a 2006 BMW 650i and looking to move into the 7 series. I've heard the 8 cylinder engine in the 750 has had problems and I just wanted some advice on whether to go with the 740 with the inline 6 or try the 750. What has been your experience with these engines?

From what I’ve seen it depends on the year when it comes to tho 50’s haven’t heard anything but praise about the 40’s but the 50’s from 2009-2012 had issues I owned a lci 2013 f02 that never had any mechanical issues what so ever burned no oil at all and I still own a my15 f02 no issues as well but it does burn about a quart of oil every 1k-1.5 miles depending on if I’m gentle on the gas or not and on my18 g12 that again burns no oil at all and I keep my foot in her tank !!!

The revisions of N63 that I have had in my '17 and now in my '20 G12 have been trouble free. I am meticulous about break in and have had no oil burning issues either. I believe the current version is N63TU (but I am not up on every variant).

After extensive research on the N63 engine (750 and 550) I decided to back out of buying a 2016 750i. This engine really seems to be a problem with many issues. Perhaps they have resolved some of these issues with the more recent versions, but I did not want to take any chances. Even the pre-owned dealer reps I spoke with agreed that the N63 has been problematic and steered me towards the 740. I am now looking for a pre-owned 740. My research indicates the 6 cylinder has been a very reliable engine.

I have the 2016 750 and did have to have the repair done under warranty for the aN63r campaign but I have also driven the 740 as a loner and there is a night and day difference between power and responsiveness between these two engines. As my repair was covered under warranty I am happy with my Choice.

Love the driveability of the V8s but open speaking BMW has does not have the best track record on V8's. Over they years three of my 4 BMW V8's required major repair/replacement in and out of the warranty period. Will get some grief on this but can not beat the simplicity/performance combination of say the GM 6.2 used in my full size SUV's I the market for a new 7 and as I buy and keep for 5+ years, I am leaning towards the 740 due to overall package, performance, reliability etc $ 800 plus to replace spark plugs is just the beginning of drama with the V8.

I don’t disagree with you on this issue. The BMW v8 is always going to have higher maintenance costs compared to the straight 6. I do much of the basic maintenance myself once the car come out of warranty such as brakes, plugs, oil changes etc. that saves quite a bit of money and then I leave the more difficult repairs to the experts.

I have leased a 2010, 2013, 2015, 2017 - 750***8217;s. All trouble free, but I only had them less than 3 years. I now have a 2019 850, so far trouble free. I have had 740 loaners, and driven an associate 740 2015 and 2018. While perfectly acceptable, there is a world of difference in power, acceleration, responsiveness, fun of driving, between the 6 and the 8 cylinder engines. I would not own either without BMW warranty. With warranty, I would go for the 8 cylinder

I also to do oil, brakes etc myself, 1. I know it is done right, 2. the time I save is incredible (I get pissed if a front or rear axle brake job is 1 hours + or more start to finish), 3. Yes I save a bucket of money, but my GM V8's in my trucks are bullet proof. Two weeks ago rear air spring went out of wife X6 5.0. (again I buy and keep) for 6 or so years, Dealer wanted $2k. Mailed order the parts for $440 and start to finish in my garage was three hours. Sad that an extended warranty is needed for the BMW Engines, Most anybody can fix a GM 6.2. Currently have a 535D also, looked at the 550 but (yes I am different) was the driving range, X6 gets perhaps 13 mpg around town, and 5 series with 18 gallon tank would be worse than stopping to charge a Tesla all the time. Summary love the BMW V8, not a fan of the reliablty and complexity
