I'm shopping for wheel & tire packages. On a budget right now, but desperately need new wheels & tires (on mismatched right now).
I want to be careful not to just "make something work" and sacrifice handling. However, am I limited to wheels with an offset between 15-25? I've read a little bit about offsets, but not sure I completely understand. Almost every wheel & tire package I've found (primarily on Craigslist) that I like has an offset that is much larger than 25.

Here are a few I've found thus far:
Will any of these work?

1. 17x7.5-ET38 offset
2. fronts 17x7.5-41mm offset. rear 17x8.5-50mm offset
3. style #185, 8J x 17-ET34 offset (I don't know what "185" is or "8J" is)
4. OEM BMW Wheels from a 2006 325XI with Dunlop Winter Sport 3D 205/55R16 94V M+S Tires (Don't know what the offset is yet)
5. 8x17-ET46 offset with 235/55 R17
6. 16x7-ET31 offset

The very first thing you need to worry about is hub bore size. ALL E39s have a 74mm hub bore. MOST all other bmw's have a 72mm hub bore. Which means you can NOT use wheels from another bmw unless they are bored out.

If you find an E39 specific wheel, you wont have to worry about offset. They will fit correctly. Here is a guide to get you started http://www.bmwstylewheels.com/5

Yes the best fitting and looking wheels for E39 are low offset - between 15 and 25. However there are a some higher offset stock wheels. You just have to make sure you have the proper tire size

The list misses style 5 and a few others.

The biggest thing is to make sure they are off of an E39. The styles do cross over to other models of BMWs so just cause they are a style available to E39 doesn't mean that they are e39 specific

Why don't you just get tires for your current wheels?
As suggested by ssjrich540 be careful. The E39 has a hub size not shared with its siblings.
