HI there, I've just bought a 2008 330D touring and it came without the factory head unit in it. I have found several suitable ones on ebay, so I called my local dealer to ask if it would work and if I'd need a code. The dealer told me that it would never work as each radio is individually coded to the car, they can't unlock it and I would have to buy one from BMW.

Is this correct or just a ruse to get me to buy a new radio, as I suspect?

Thanks in advance.

Radios are individually coded for the car however it is the simplest form of coding. A coder simple reads your FA from your car and then writes it to your new radio. That way you radio knows the region you live in and what options your car has. Not all E90 radios are the same. I have seen some that did not have most fiber. I have a 2011 radio in my US 2006 and it works great. The newer radios don't have the fading LCD issue like the 2008 and back ones.

The FA is not written to the radio. FA/VO is only written/stored in the CAS and FRM modules.

The radio just needs to have the coding defaulted based off the VO. Don't actually try to write the VO/FA to the radio. It will fail.

But you can recode the radio no problem by someone who knows what they're doing. A dealer will never install used parts for liability, warranty, etc issues and they will tell you anything to make sure you feel you they are the only option. Just make sure you get the right one.

Best to take this to a coding board.
You may need a ICOM Cable or somebody with one to do it
as opposed to a k/d can cable.

I would try to find a coder with an ICOM cable in your area if
possible.

If the radio was gone it suggests they modded it . I would check that the factory wiring is
intact and try to determine which amp speaker system or no amp speaker system you have.
