Man stole street sweeper to live as 'abominable snowman.'

A Cincinnati man has been found not guilty by reason of insanity after trying to cross the Canadian border in a stolen street sweeper.

Damon Francis believed he had the power to control the weather and predict the future.

He said he was going to live in the Alaskan woods because he was a prophet, and that the cold wouldn't bother him because he was the abominable snowman.

Mr Francis, of North College Hill, has been diagnosed with multiple mental disorders including depression, delusions and schizophrenia.

He faced charges of vehicle theft, theft, breaking and entering and vandalism at Hamilton County Court, reports the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Mr Francis, who stole the sweeper by driving his cadillac through a compound fence, told doctors God chose that particular truck for him because its lights were on.

He said he couldn't travel to Alaska - where he would save the world - in the Cadillac because it had been given to him by the devil.

"...found not guilty by reason of insanity..." hmmm.

I never understood that. If someone does something bad/wrong/stupid, why does it make it okay if they are insane or 'temporarily insane'?

"Oh yeah, that guy is totally insane. He didn't know what he was doing, set him free."

Where's the logic in this?

Just because a person is deemed not guilty by reason of insanity does not mean he is a free man. That person ends up going to a mental hospital for treatment and is only released if deemed fit for society.
