The icon on my driver side fan control has rubbed out:

I've found a replacement kit but I think it's about £90 as it includes all the buttons:

Many 5-series owners have complained about this issue. Do you use your fingernails?

I share your agony. My AC switch and trunk release button have deteriorated. I can tell you with certainty I do not use nails or harsh solvents for cleaning. I can only suspect some petroleum based substance came in contact, perhaps after servicing. Shame on BMW either way IMO. Any helpful recommendations are appreciated.

It is a common problem and similar to wearing the SoftTouch plastic coating. My liftgate button's black is nearly completely worn off; the only one wearing at all. I have three spots worn through the SoftTouch.
