AC Not responsive with new IHKA

3697 Views 11 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  AtomsForLunch
Hey guys. I'll walk you guys through the problem series.
1. My IHKA went out (no display at all), and the car started blowing hot air out of the foot well vents constantly, even when off.
2. Replaced the FSU to no avail. This didn't change anything.
3. Replaced the IHKA, the screen on the new IHKA is working and the car isn't blowing hot air anymore.
I still dont have AC though, the AC doesn't respond at all. No hot or cold air, just no air at all. What should I troubleshoot next? What could the problem be?
Doug Huffman advised "The Hot-water Control Valve is normally OPEN and energized by the “A/C control unit” to SHUT." in a previous post, so that explains that.

There are diff versions of this HVAC panel.
Are you sure you got the correct HVAC panel?
Maybe it needs some "coding"?
Yes a new IHKA panel must be coded to the car.
Wow that's news to me! Is this something the home gamer can do, or should I take it to my local indie? Or a specialty coder?
Yes a new IHKA panel must be coded to the car.
Home gamer can do it. If the home gamer has module coding software.

Hot water controls valve is auxiliary water pump you can activate/deactivate it by NCSExpert coding

If you get the IHKA from the same year and model coding is not required.
My 1999 528iT was not working correctly in Auto so I replaced it with another from another 1999 528iT and have no issues.
One should also be able to use the online part database sites to get a list of compatible or retroactively compatible IHKA units by simply entering your VIN to pull up the diagram for the IHKA. When you pull up the IHKA's diagram you should see a list of part nbrs that have a build date range. You select the number that falls within your car's range. You then can click on the correct part nbr for your car and this should give you a list of other models that may use the same part as well as a list of superceded part nbrs that are retroactively exchangeable or not exchangeable. Doing this will prevent buying parts that don't work for you build date.

Some online part database sites that will give you this info:
I've heard of the software but haven't tried using it. Is there a general info thread on it? And what power supply should I use on my car while its programming?
Home gamer can do it. If the home gamer has module coding software.

Man, mine is an '01 540i Wagon. I don't know how likely it will be for me to come across another one. Do you know what options/attributes must be the same for it to work? Even so, I might just have it coded to work anyway.
The ETK just shows one from 09/00 on.

power supply being a real good battery charger, not a run of the mill one. last thing you ever want is the battery to die in the midst of coding.
I saw this as well. I my replacement is from '03 I believe, so according to this it should be working. I'll double check later.
