If what you want/need is a full-function key, a dealer is the only source. Aftermarket keys can be cut to give access to the doors & trunk, but that`s about it. They do not have the transponders in them that allow for starting the engine.
Your best bet for a new key is to buy online from a discounting BMW dealership like The BMW/MINI Part Store (dealership in Cincinnati, OH). A new key (#66126955748) will run you around $130 and comes pre-cut and ready to start the car. Take a look at this thread for more info: http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=1008294.
I have purchased keys from eBay with transponder and 3 key remote chip for less than $30:00. Had them cut then I coded and programmed with AK-90. All work fine with full functions. A much cheaper option than dealership!
New to BMW so this may be a stupid question but what is an AK-90. Is it a BMW specific piece of equipment or a generic setup that will copy the microcode and copy to another key?
I have a theft recovery 2003 325cic with only 1 key.
