Hey guys/gals,

I'm looking to change my fuel pump/filter on my 1988 325e and was wondering what aftermarket parts would be recommended? Not looking for anything special. Just something to get my car running again.


Also, I'm not 100% sure its the fuel pump/filter that crapped out but it seemed to have the right symptoms.

I've looked and the after market don't generally cost a lot less than stock. I can get OEM for about $200, a good aftermarket is around $120 IIRC. I've had some good luck with boneyard pumps. Seems whack but you never know how recently a pump was put in on an E30 in a boneyard. Up here a junkyard pump is $30. If you take a 12V screwgun battery with you and somehow connect wires to the right leads you can test them after you take them out. I used an old defunct charger with wires leading from the right points. OTOH, the pump is usually going to work. I suspect that very few cars landed in the boneyard because of a bad fuel pump, though stranger things have happened. The hard part to test is does it work but is on its last legs. Oh well, it's a gamble.

I have my boubts about after market parts. The original lasted 30+ years and some people want a cheap replacement? I know it is a PITA that the part failed when you own the car but you also want a reliable car.
Test you existing pump for pressure and flow before you junk it. You just never know.

I'll have to look into that since now my car is acting up again. I had first just replaced the filter to see if that was the problem. It turned on after replacing the filter and it felt AMAZING! it sounded and felt almost brand new compared to before.

It has now been a week and I'm back to square one.. the car went back to having a rough idle, then there was a delay after accelerating, and then my car wouldn't turn on. I can get it to turn on but only while I hit the pump through the back seat as I turn the key.

I don't know what I should test out for first? If it was the pump then the car wouldn't
have turned on after changing the filter, right? or felt as good as it did?

I do now have something to add though.. I was filling up my gas tank and noticed that when it filled up, some gas leaked onto the ground. I know because I'm 100% sure that I didn't spill any. It was dark out so I didn't get the chance to examine the tube but that got me thinking. Would it make sense if there had been a hole there for a while and dirt has slowly been getting into the tube and making it's way into the tank? now there's enough dirt in the tank that its clogging the filter as I replace them? :dunno:

It could also be rust from the tank clogging the filter. Maybe get a new one and cut open the old one.

pull the pump from the tank and inspect the prefilter. that will tell you if youre pumps pulling gunk in.
